John Gapuz Abuan

John Gapuz Abuan was born on May 16, 1919 in Parian Este, Bauang, La Union, Philippines. His parents are Abdon Rimando Abuan and Martina Salanga Gapuz. He was the eldest of 7 children. In 1941, he enlisted into the United States Navy. He served during World War II, The Korean War and The Cuban Missile Crisis. During this time in the Navy, he married Soledad Laigo Caluza Abuan and had a daughter, Cristina, and a son, Martin. In 1962, he was honorably discharged from the Navy. He briefly worked at Providence Hospital and Burlington Railroads. He then found a job with the United States Postal Service and worked there for twenty plus years until he retired around 1994 to take care of Soledad. In 1996, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. 2 months later, Soledad passed away. During the next 19 years, John encountered some health issues along the way but enjoyed being in the company of his family with whom he lived with. He was an avid Seattle sports fan and loved to watch professional wrestling, mma and boxing. He also became an active member of the Bataan and Corregidor Survivors Association and their Families. John passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2015. He is preceded in death by his wife Soledad and his son Martin. He is survived by his daughter Cristina Abuan Sacramento and her husband Renato, his grandsons Renato Abuan Sacramento, Reynaldo Abuan Sacramento and his wife Marygrace Aguiling Sacramento.
