Obituary

Dec 14, 1933 ~ July 11, 2022

Art was born in Walla Walla, Washington, to Arthur Q. and Ethel Moore. Known endearingly to family and close friends as “Sonny,” he was like a father to his three younger siblings, Carolyn, Mary Lou and Billy. At the family home on the beach in Des Moines, Washington, he became an avid boater. That led to four years of service with the Coast Guard – which kindled his fondness for Alaska – after graduating Highline High School in 1952. He studied two years at the University of Washington. And on June 19, 1959, he married the love of his life, Florence McJunkin.

His passion for flying led to a career with Alaska Airlines, then Western, where he became a captain, and finally Delta. His career took the family to Los Angeles and Salt Lake City before returning to Seattle. Fellow pilots described him as a true gentleman. His calmness and professionalism was on display when he landed a Boeing 727 with a disabled landing gear in Minneapolis, earning him nomination for a prestigious award.

Family and friends attest to his kindness, patience and generosity, including the many missionaries he and Florence support. He was eager to meet any need. Some who parked their car in Art’s driveway for a period of time returned to find they had new tires and a new battery. He enjoyed sharing his love of fishing, boating and flying. There were many boat and float plane trips to Canada.

Art was honored for his longtime service on the board of the mission NAIM, North America Indigenous Ministries.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; three children, Art (Tiffany) Moore, Colleen (Dan) Strom and Kevin Moore; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Allie (Justin) Hymas, Selah, Ozzie and Asa; Phil (Nina) Moore and Theo; Alec (Izzy) Moore; Alexa (Merick) Ahlberg, Owen and Declan; Sabrina (Levi) Norris; Ashley and Jessica.
