Lucy Von Heesen

Obituary

Lucy Von Heesen died on January 24, 2021 at Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington of natural causes, unrelated to COVID-19.

She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 17, 1932 and raised with 3 siblings. Lucy was a lifelong learner, a world traveler, faithful Episcopalian, and voracious reader. She enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal or New York Times cover to cover on most Sundays, after she decided to take a sabbatical from church services. World travel was her goal, and she made some great treks in her lifetime. Some of which included The Holy Land, numerous European countries and as many US national parks as possible. Lucy made even local escapes and adventures incredibly fun, as she was always game for a casino run, appetizers and cocktails or an afternoon matinee. She often hosted book discussion groups, game nights and community dinners for friends and those who she considered extended family.

Her failing eyesight and memory impacted her quality of life, but the stories of the past and her various travel itineraries could still incite a spontaneous giggle and sparkle in her eye. She called everyone a gem, often wore costume jewelry rings, loved classic films, and collected and enjoyed all Bond films. If she was not watching CNN or a Seahawks game, her apartment was filled with classical music and decorated with art pieces that were of special sentimental value to her.

During her lifetime in Kent, Washington, Lucy was extremely involved as a member of St. Columba Episcopal Church. She was instrumental in the running of the Children’s Care Center housed in the church building during its existence. Lucy also led Evening Prayer at St. Columba’s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle and served on the Bishop’s Committee.

Lucy was a property manager of SHAG apartments in Montana for 30 years, where she took great pride in caring for the elderly and regularly made the drive to check in on them. Interestingly, she worked for the FBI as a secretary in the fifties. However, she did not share many stories of that time, as it was The Cold War era.

She is predeceased by her parents and two siblings. One brother in Texas survives her, in addition to her two sons and many friends.

Lucy truly was a gem herself; whose ready wit, infectious giggle and vast knowledge enriched all who knew her. In her honor, please raise a glass of your favorite wine. “You’re a gem!”
