Richard A. BRUNS

Richard was born February 26, 1918 in Linden, WA. His parents bought a “stump farm” his words” near Deming, WA in 1935 that would later become Black Mountain Ranch. He graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1937. In 1941 he joined the Navy and spent 18 months in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal repairing F-4U’s as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class before his honorable discharge in December 1945. In 1946 he and his brother Bob went back to the family place and formed a partnership which would eventually create one of the nicest dairy farms in Whatcom County and took in several of the surrounding mountains before they sold it to the Black Mountain Corporation in 1971 to be turned into a Dude ranch. He met his wife and sweetheart, Rossie Hanes in 1973 in Winthrop, WA and they were married in 1975. They built a house on his wife’s property near Naalehu, Hawaii in 1979 and have spent the last 24 winters there. In the spring he always returns to the Northwest where he enjoyed prospecting and mining in the summer and was one of the principals in the Brown Bear Mine for more than twenty-five years. Beloved husband of Rossie; step-father of Dallas Hanes, Beverly McLain and Barbara Jones and brother of Francis E. Blewer of Puyallup, WA. He was preceded in death by his older brother Bob who died in Bellingham, WA. Funeral service 10:00 AM Friday, May 23, 2003 at Bonney-Watson, Washington Memorial, 16445 Pacific Highway S., SeaTac. Interment to follow at the Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA.
