Alice R. Cox

September 12, 1920 - April 16, 2021

Obituary

Alice R. Cox, 100 years of age, was granted her angel wings early in the morning on Friday, April 16, 2021, in Seattle, Washington.

Alice was born on September 12, 1920, to the late Richard and Nettie Evans in Belton, Texas. She received her formal education in the Belton School District and graduated from West Belton High School, Class of 1939.  She is the last living student from the Class of 1939 at her passing.

Alice married Milton Beene and from this union they had three daughters Mary, twins Nettie and Annette. They would later divorce.  Alice volunteered and assisted with several school projects with her daughters at the local Community Center in Belton. One of the school projects was the partnership with military personnel from Ft. Hood, US Army Base, in Killeen, Texas. She met and later married Bernard L Cox and to this union they were blessed with a daughter, Selnelda (Shay).

The African Methodist Episcopal Church was the spiritual foundation of Alice’s upbringing. After moving to Seattle, she joined the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Seattle, Washington.

She worked along her sisters (Nettie and Johnnie) for years with the catering preparations and decorations for the Church Annual Tea, receptions, weddings, etc. She later became the seamstress for the Hospitality Committee, Women’s Missionary Society, Ushers, Stewardesses, and constructed and sewed the Altar and Communion table linens. She pondered the invitation to become a Deaconess, and later became a dedicated member of the Class Leaders’ ministry (Class #41) where she served with her youngest daughter.

Her daily activities involved reading the Bible, inspirational books and magazines, working crossword puzzles, listening to gospel music or church services or watching religious programs. She would send cards and notes, talk on the phone with her sisters, reach out to old friends from school or army life. She stayed informed on news, health, entertainment events, and watching Family Feud with Steve Harvey.

Alice leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters: Mary Scott (Herman Huggins), Nettie Beene, Annette Evans, Selnelda Cox; Grandchildren: Jyvette Dobson, Michael Evans, Felicia Evans; and Great-Grandson Joseph Dobson. Siblings: Mary F. Sargent, Belton, Texas, Louise G. Johnson, Tacoma, Washington. Brother-in-Law, Alphonse Johnson, Tacoma Washington. Sister-in-Law, Edith Alvin, Miami, Florida. Goddaughter, Estella Murray, Belton, Texas. A host of Nieces, Nephews, and family friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Cox, parents Richard and Nettie Evans; Sisters, Nettie McDaniel, and Johnnie Hammond, of Seattle, Washington. Brother, Robert Evans, Sr. of Belton, Texas. In-Laws: Roosevelt McDaniel, Rueben Hammond, of Seattle, Washington.

Ida Mae Evans, Clarence Sargent, of Belton, Texas. Sofie Myrick, of White Plains, New York.

Carl Wooten and Rose Raiford, of Goldsboro, North Carolina.

A private Graveside service will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington.

The family is planning to hold a celebration of life on her birthday in September.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alice’s honor to the Central Area Senior Center, of Seattle.

Now I know why I called Sister Cox my Church Mama; she was an Evans born in Texas. I love you Mama, such a sweet and beautiful soul. Sure will miss you sitting in front of the usher row. Hallelujah, a new angel is at work! With deepest sympathy to my family of sisters.
