Obituary

David Anthony Barnes, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, left this life on January 13, 2004, after a long battle with heart problems.

Dave was born in New Westminster, B.C., on January 29, 1938. He and his parents, Paul and Leila Barnes Driver, moved to Seattle in 1951. He met his future wife, Aletha Case, at Roosevelt High School graduated 1956. David attended the University of Washington, was awarded Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Business administration 1960.

Dave and Aletha were married in 1959. He served in the U.S. army, then worked for General Electric in Richland, WA, where sons David, Jr. 1961 and Jeffery Scott 1963 were born. In 1964, he moved to Seattle to work for SAFECO Insurance where he became manager of Research and Long-Range Planning and retired after 25 years due to heart-related disability.

Dave’s first love was always his family; he was a dedicated and supportive husband and father. He also loved to sail and took his family and friends on sailing adventures around the San Juan Islands and around Puget Sound. He enjoyed taking his family skiing, backpacking, playing racquetball, travel, and being an avid supporter of Aletha’s musical interests. After retirement, Dave and Aletha cruised to many parts of the world. David is survived by his wife and sons, 3 granddaughters Bronwen, 15, Emma, 11, and Alexandra, 6 older sister Phyllis Standbridge of Quesnel, B.C., 9 nieces and nephews, many grand-nieces and nephews in Canada, and many cousins.

Dave was a wonderful man: intelligent, witty, loving, fun, creative, gracious, and always generous. He is greatly missed, but those who knew him know that they will always be blest because he was part of their lives. Interment will be at Washington Memorial Park in Sea Tac, WA, in early February.
