Farlin Paul Newman Sr. (“Bud”) died peacefully at his home in Federal Way, Washington, on December 16, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born on November 21, 1939, in Tacoma, Washington.
Bud was a man of many talents whose life reflected dedication, perseverance, and service. He had a remarkable ability to solve problems, never hesitating to learn a new skill when one was needed. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work and carried that strong work ethic throughout his life.
Bud devoted many years to military service. He proudly served in the Washington Army National Guard and worked full time as a technician, always committed to supporting the mission and those he served alongside. Through steadfast dedication, leadership, and integrity, he began his career as a private and rose through the ranks, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer Five (CW5)—a rare and highly respected achievement. His service to his state and country was a source of considerable pride for both Bud and his family.
More than anything, Bud was a devoted family man. He shared 61 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Karen Anne (Hoover) Newman. Their partnership was built on deep love, loyalty, and mutual respect, forming the foundation of a strong and enduring family.
Bud was a proud father of seven children: Paul, Maria (Thomas), Kathleen (Alex), Robert (Alyssa), Michael (April), Ron (Joy), and Jonathan. He found immense joy in his role as grandfather, lovingly known as “Papa” to nineteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his son, Farlin Paul Newman Jr. (Paul).
A faithful Catholic, Bud lived his life guided by the teachings of Christ and the values of faith, family, and service. Those who knew him will remember him for his steady presence, quiet strength, practical wisdom, and unwavering devotion to God and family. He led by example, showing what it meant to love deeply, serve faithfully, and live with integrity.
Bud’s legacy lives on through the family he cherished and the generations who will remember him always as Bud—and lovingly, as Papa.
