Vinnie “Marie” Lewis Filer

Vinnie “Marie” Filer, born to Seth and Effie Alma Lewis in Keystone, Oklahoma, September 30, 1917, died in Judson Park Health Center, Des Moines, Washington,

January 6, 2006. She was 88 years old.

When she was a young child her family moved from Oklahoma to Oregon for several years, later moving to the Beaver Creek area near Twisp. There she met her husband to be, Dean Filer. They were married June 5, 1936, and lived on a cattle ranch. They celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage before Dean was taken away by cancer.

From the ranch they made a swift move to Oregon for one year, but quickly returned to the Methow Valley, buying a farm where they raised apples for twelve years before a hard winter kill took the orchard.

After Dean’s retirement they moved to Wenatchee where Marie cared for Dean during his illness. Two years after his death in 1994 she moved into a retirement home in Des Moines, Washington to be near her daughters.

Marie had many loves. She valued time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved music, gardening, growing different kinds of flowers, crafts, cooking, camping, and her study of health foods. She is well remembered for her interest in and ownership of health food stores in Twisp and Omak.

She is survived by her daughters Jan Kelley of Omak, and Donna Schulz of Seattle; grandchildren Tim Johnson, Twisp; Lori Garcia, Cottonwood, Arizona; Jodie Gonzales, New River, Arizona; Kim Budd, Clinton, Michigan; Cheri Schulz, Burien, WA; Bryan Schulz, Seattle, WA.. Great grandchildren include Travis Johnson, Marysville, WA; Nina Johnson, Everett, WA; Jacob Hope, and Joshua Johnson, Twisp, WA; Jerimiah and Brandon Gonzales, New River, AZ; Levon and Nikco Garcia, Cottonwood, AZ; Heidi and Casey Budd, Clinton, MI; Amber Budd, Kalamazoo, MI; Andre Ursino, Yuma, AZ; Kayli, Spencer, JT and Reece Schulz, Seattle, WA; and great great granddaughter Shaunna Gonzales, New River, AZ.

She is also survived by a sister Opal Burck of Moses Lake, and a brother Robert Lewis of Wilson Creek. She was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister Thelma Doughty.

Services will be held at the Mormon Church in Twisp, Friday, January 13, 2006 at 2:00 PM.

Interment will follow at the Beaver Creek Cemetery at 3:30 PM. A gathering of friends and family will be at the Twisp Senior Center All are welcome.
