Stephen "Hatman" Gordon
September 5, 1952 - September 11, 2023
Obituary
STEPHEN “Hatman” GORDON, was born the younger of two children on September 5, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois.
He had what could be described as a normal upbringing, as a mostly straight A student, and a good athlete, until the death of his parents as a teenager.
While his dream of playing baseball in the major league waned, he worked in construction, where he then found himself relocating to Bellevue, WA.
Over a span of 30+ years, Steve forged strong bonds, lifelong friendships and relationships surrounding his love for the game of basketball.
Steve worked as a basketball coach, trainer, and consultant, specifically as a Special Assistant Coach for several NBA teams including our beloved Seattle Supersonics, Portland Trailblazers, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
He will most be remembered from his time at the Pro Sports Club, where from its infant stages, Steve lived in the gym in baggy oversized sweats and a golf hat turned to the back, where he could be found barking orders and instructions to players for hours on end.
His ability to manage players of all ages and levels of society was truly remarkable, particularly his efforts to provide access for Seattle and Tacoma’s inner-city youth to train with NBA players.
With his comedic wit, mixed with extreme sarcasm, Steve provided constant entertainment for all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
His strong personality, charisma, and a shrewd intelligence provided access to and built relationships with local businessmen and women and Microsoft elites.
It was at the Pro Club where he met Megan Lantry. They had a 25+ year marriage, where he was a stepfather to her two children. The relationship abruptly ended under untenable circumstances.
Steve’s transgressions produced a period of incarceration and tremendous loss of trust. Upon release, he immediately sought to engage in efforts to pay back those he harmed in the only way he knew how, hustle.
Ultimately that hustle cost him his health, friends, and family, but he would want you all to know he is truly and deeply sorry for the harm he has caused.
Steve passed away on September 11, 2023, witnessed by caregivers and close friends.
