Evelyn Doris Untiedt Arend

Evelyn Doris Untiedt Arend passed away on May 30, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 2, 1932 in Unity, Wisconsin, the second of thirteen children born to Harry George Untiedt and Viola Frances Leonhard. She married Clemence Joseph Arend on July 25, 1953. Clem’s military service and career with General Motors enabled them to live in many places, including Germany and England. Evie loved to travel and everywhere they lived she made home. She loved to meet new people and throughout her travels made lifelong friends.

Evie had many artistic passions, including sewing, pottery, painting, cake decorating, cooking and gardening. She worked at several places over the years, including Shusters, Gimbels, the crisis hotline, and Alverno College. She always made time to help others. She often expressed how grateful she was to her parents for the gift of the Catholic faith, as that sustained her. Above all, she believed in family.

Evie is survived by her husband and her six children: JeanMarie Lewis Harmon, Mary Lundeen, Stephanie, Fran Emmett Esmond, Robert Christine, and Christopher Sherrie; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 7 sisters: Joan Petrykowski, Donna Scidmore, Karen Barry D’Orazio, Geraldine Paul Hein, Beverly, Patricia, Cynthia William Singstock; 4 brothers: John Laura, Harry Patricia, Jerome Olga and Lynn Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their thanks to the kind caregivers at Swedish Hospital.

A Vigil will be held at Bonney-Watson, 16445 Intn’l Blvd., Seatac, Friday, June 4 at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Philomena Parish, 1790 So. 222nd St., Des Moines on Saturday, June 5 at 12:00 noon; reception to follow.

Evie asked that donations be made in her memory to Alverno College, PO Box 343922, Milw., WI 53234.

Precious Lord, guide my hand..Lead me home…Lord, I’m so tired, a little weak and so worn…thru the storm and thru the night…hold my hand, don’t let me fall…lead me home.

My Darling Mother, I am so thankful to have had you as long as I did and will miss your dear face the rest of my days until the Dear Lord reunites us again.

Evie will forever protect my favorite example of what “calmness” looks like in real life. Her ability to be at ease and realistic, without taunting apathy makes my shoulders relax, and my breathing slow, and reminds me that, regardless of the challenge, I can get through it gracefully. Wrapping up in one of her beautiful quilts is almost meditative now. Thank you, Evie. I will work to be a worthy “calmness” protege. xo

Our love and prayers are with you. It is difficult for those left behind, but time will ease your pain and allow you to cherish fond memories.

May God support you

all the day long,

until the shadows lengthen

and the evening comes,

and the busy world is hushed,

and the fever of life is over,

and our work is done.

Then in His mercy

may He give us a safe

lodging and a holy rest,

and peace at the last.
