Obituary

Hayes Leon Wooten was born to Howard Lincoln and Johnnie C Morris Wooten March 22, 1921 in Lovelady, Texas. He was third of Howard Wooten’s twelve children. After graduating from high school, he left home and set about developing an independent spirit and learning about what the world had to offer.

 

Hayes joined the army in May, 1941 and with the outbreak of WWII, he was deployed to England where he and his unit set up the camp for the combat troops.  Once this duty was completed, the unit was sent to North Africa and took part in the invasion of Italy. Hayes remained in Italy until the end of the war and then returned to the States.

 

Returning to Texas, he drove a cab in Houston where he met Elizabeth. He permanently moved to Seattle in 1947 and was join by Elizabeth. Hayes worked many years, for the W.G. Clark company, as a Teamster construction truck driver until his retirement. He enjoyed working with his hands doing house remodeling, building houses, woodworking and “farming” with his tractor. He liked to stay busy and was always finding new things to challenge himself.

 

Hayes was a teller of stories. He enjoyed fishing and bird, deer and moose hunting. One of his favorite outings was salmon fishing in Alaska with his brothers Octavius and Burt, brother- in- law Floyd, and nephews Gary and Gregory.  These trips brought great joy and camaraderie to daddy.

 

Hayes was called home to his rest the evening of Friday, May 10, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.

 

Hayes was preceded in death by beloved wife of 60+ years, Elizabeth A. Cockrell Wooten, his father, mother, step-mothers, brothers Howard, Morris and Octavius Wooten.

 

Hayes leaves to mourn his passing his daughters Verleeta Marie Wooten and Wanda Jean Young, His grandsons Jason A. Young and Jeffrey M. Young. He is also survived by 5 sisters and 3 brothers: W. Verleeta Benton, Robbie Marie Trigg, Princella May, Maye D. Martin(Satoria) Lawrence Jewell Beall( Floyd), A.G.Wooten, Burtis C. (Willa) Wooten, and Holloway (Sylvia).  There are numerous nephews, nieces, great nieces and nephews who will also greatly miss Uncle Hayes’ grins and laughter, advice, and love.

Pettie, Wanda and Family,

Our hearts are sadden today because of Bro. Hayes’s homegoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We are unable to make the trip to attend the service.However, we will be with you in spirit.
