Obituary
Manuel Gaerlan Carrillo
Mar. 24, 1957 – Sep. 12, 2012
After a long battle with illness, Manuel Gaerlan Carrillo, 55, passed away peacefully at Swedish Medical Center in Issaquah.
He is survived by his mother, Lolita, and his younger brother, Johnny. He was preceded in death by his father, Victor. Of his immediate family, he is survived by his wife, Shirley and sons, Geoffrey and Nicolas. He’s also survived by his several nieces and nephews, as well as by his close friends who Manuel considered to be his brothers and sisters.
Manuel Gaerlan Carrillo was born on March 24, 1957 in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Seattle’s Central District and attended grade school and middle school at Immaculate Conception. He graduated with Second Honors from O’Dea High School and was elected to The Society of Outstanding American High School Students, the nation’s leading high school honorary. Manuel received an academic grant to attend Seattle University, earning a B.A. in Business.
In 1981, Manuel began working as an HR professional for Providence Seattle Medical Center. He worked briefly at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview in 1984 and briefly worked for Swedish Medical Center when they acquired Providence Seattle. Most recently, Manuel worked as an HR Manager at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. He would have retired on September 13th, 2012, the day after his passing.
Not only did Manuel excel academically and in his career at the hospital, but he also put his all into music; something that he was very passionate about. Manuel started playing piano in the second grade and later attended Cornish Institute for classical piano. With his talent, versatile musicianship and keen ear, he became a well-respected keyboardist in many popular Seattle-based bands, including Six Feet Under, Tamaraw, Transfusion, Trix, Jet City Band and 206 (Tony Gable & 206). For a short period, he even pursued music as a career when he toured for a year in 1983.
Manuel felt fortunate to see his father, Victor, live to the age of 98, and he attributed his longevity to staying active and eating well. Determined to live a long life like his father, Manuel strived to live by these same basic principles. Manuel loved to spend time outdoors, whether it was camping, skiing, playing golf or just being close to a body of water. In his later years, Manuel’s favorite activity to stay active was walking the family dog, Tito (or I should say, the dog walked him). Manuel also loved to eat. He always read up on new restaurants to check out and continuously watched Food Network and culinary shows for inspiration for his own cooking.
Being an altruistic man that always put the needs of others before his own, Manuel made a lot of sacrifices to make a better life for his family. He was a man with great integrity and compassion, always making the honorable decision and always open and respectful to people from all walks of life. Manuel was a loyal, dependable friend that maintained close relationships with many of the people he befriended during his childhood. Those that knew Manuel will always remember him for his warm smile, contagious laughter and the unconditional love he had for his family, friends and his community. The impact that he’s made during his short time in this world is immeasurable. The memory of Manuel Carrillo will forever be a reminder to live life honorably, be true to yourself and enjoy every moment you have on this Earth.

His family, his wife the young men that made them who they are because of how Manuel taught the boys, my nephew how to be the men that they are now. To my oldest sister, wife of Manuel, to the two young men. Be proud that he is your father, your husband. For Manuel is the spirit that we all would want to be. A Good Man with such soul. To dear Manuel,
I regret that I was not able to se you because when I arrived, you were not anymore disposed to receive visitors at the ICU. But all the time I prayed fervently for you tat the merciful and loving God would always at your side. Even though I did not see you personally, I have heard a lot about you. When I listened to the testimonies about you during the Necrological Service at the Provident Hospital. I saw the picture of you as you truly is..described as a humble. very dedicated, very compassionate and caring person. There I saw you as person so much loved and revered by the people whom you worked with and who experienced your benevolence and unwavering service.
I am hopeful that you are by the side of God now, the One rewards every good works and who love you the way your are. The Damo , our family is grateful for all the good you have shared especially to your beloved wife ( my niece) and to your sons Jeff and Nick. May the loving God enfold you in His arms as you come home to Him. Manuel, we all love you !
