Obituary

Waln, Reverend Alfred J., age 86, passed away March 21, 2005, in Des Moines. Al is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth “Liz”; daughter, Patricia Ross Steve; son, Kenneth Waln Maureen Conard; two sisters, Ilah Lohrey and Zada Lyman; one brother, Richard Waln, and several nieces and nephews. His sister and brother preceded him in death.

Al was born in Holyoke, CO, on November 24, 1918, and spent his early years on a farm. He finished high school in Texas, and graduated from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, before attending and graduating from the American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley, California. Al and Liz met at Ottawa and were married on August 11, 1946.

Al began his ministerial career as an American Baptist in Shenandoah, Clinton and Oelwein, Iowa; and continued his career as a Methodist in Ritzville, White Salmon and Coupeville, Washington. He retired in 1984, and Al and Liz continued living in Coupeville, until they moved to Wesley Homes in 1997. Al had many interests, including golf, fishing, writing books, plays and poetry, acting in and directing plays, bowling, volleyball and painting.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005, at 2:00 PM at Wesley Homes Gardens, Logan Hall, 815 S. 216th Street, Des Moines, WA. The family has entrusted arrangements to BONNEY-WATSON Washington Memorial, 16445 International Blvd., SeaTac, WA 206 242-1787. Memorials may be sent to Circle of Concern at Wesley Homes.
