Alice Joy Carpenter

July 27, 1930 - January 8, 2016

Obituary

Alice  (AJ) Carpenter passed away January 8,2016 at the age of 85.  Born in Seattle to Grace and Theodore McConkey, Alice grew up in West Seattle and was a West Seattle High School graduate.

In 1952, she met her future husband and soulmate of nearly 64 years, Bill Carpenter. Bill was in the US Navy and stationed In Tacoma, WA. For the next 12 months, Bill courted Alice and eventually they married. Together they raised three daughters, Kathleen, Colleen, and Maureen.

Alice’s working career started at Harborview Hospital, then Boeing and eventually Providence Mt. St. Vincent. She retired from her position as Executive Housekeeper in 1972.

Soon came retirement for both Alice and Bill. They enjoyed spending time camping, fishing, and being with their growing family which now included grandchildren, great grandchildren and later great-great grandchildren.

Antique hunting, arts and crafts, holiday decorating, and gardening kept Alice Busy. She and Bill worked hard on their yard  creating a beautiful park-like setting. They spent many evenings together swinging in their gazebo admiring all their hard work.

Eventually Alice and Bill moved from their West Seattle home to Kent. There they spent the next 7 years getting to know the community and every “Mom and Pop” restaurant there was. The new favorite pastime became eating out and getting to know the staff of each restaurant. Eventually life came full circle and the love birds moved back to their beloved West Seattle. Alice and Bill moved to an apartment at Mt. St. Vincent assisted living and then later to long term care.

Oh mom how I am going to miss you! I already miss calling you and getting your warm hugs. You were always my biggest cheerleader, my fierce protector and a great mom to me. I will keep you close to my heart and continue to love you forever. You taught us that hard work and honesty always pays off. May you rest in peace and be free of the pain you suffered. I love mom!!

Grandma AJ , I am very sad that we have no more time together. I learned so much about you these past two years! The first time that we brought Michael to meet you and Grandpa Bill was an moment I will never forget. Just to see the joy in your eyes while holding Michael brought me to tears because you never wanted to let go. All you wanted to do was look at his little legs. I will make sure your spirit will live with us and Michael will know who you are. We love you to the moon and back.

On behalf of Dottie Kord and her family, know that we share the loss and deeply feel the pain not only for ourselves but for her daughters, son-in-laws, her grandchildren, both great and great, her family and friends, but mostly for Bill, the pillar in his life. We have a lifetime of memories as our families together shared in so many celebrations. Bill and Alice were always there as was Alice’s quiet, proud smile bestowed on her family’s accomplishments. I myself recall her many wise and thoughtful conversations around Dan and Colleen’s table. Always sharp in mind, strong in spirit and a teacher of what it takes to make life work, and work she did!

We are grateful she is free from all pain and suffering.

Our sincerest sympathy and love always to her family. She leaves us her devoted wonderful husband and her legacy of strength which will be needed by her family and others in the days to come. All our love.

Grandma Alice, I am greatly saddened you have left us all but I am grateful you are at peace and feel no more pain. Your love for all us grandchildren is endless and we still feel that love and will cherish it forever. I think the thing I will miss most is hearing your laughs that ended with a hilarious snort and an ” Oh shoot “. I love you grandma, rest in peace.

We are saddened by the loss of Alice and pray for God’s strength and guidance for Bill and the rest of the family.

We treasure the many family celebrations that brought us all together at Dan and Colleen’s. We shared wonderful memorable conversations~gone from here, but forever in our hearts.

We will very much miss Alice’s distinctive laugh, charming wit, and Alice’s love for her family.

Grandma, we will miss you dearly and never forget you. I am thankful to have had such a caring and warm hearted grandmother. I hope you rest in peace knowing that you meant so much to our family and may you now dance with the Angels. I will cherish all the memories we have of you until we meet again, if only for “just a minute.”

Love always, Jeremy and Trina

I would like to offer my sympathy to Bill and all of his family in the loss of Alice. Marg had a special place in her heart for Bill and Alice. I am so glad for the times we had together in our trips to Seattle and their visits here. I hope Marg and Alice will have plenty of time to get things organized in heaven the same way they did here.

Well grandma I guess you will be cutting the clouds with a few angels. Make sure you get to know some of the rock stars up there so when my time comes I have an in. I remember your laugh the most and the snort that followed and that would always put a smile on my face. You had a love for antiques and that was obvious because of who you married. You also showed a special place in your heart for my wife and daughter and I am forever greatful and I know you are looking down on us now. Until we see each other again. Love you.

Grandma,

Words cannot express how much your love and support has meant throughout the years. Your warm embrace and cheerful talks always brought me comfort during hard times and I cannot thank you enough. Your love for life was contagious and will be something I will always cherish. I feel blessed to have had such a remarkable and genuine grandmother.

Love you always.

Grandma, the world is a little less sparkly without you in it, but I am grateful for the 35 year of love , laughter and support you gave me. When I moved away to chase my dreams, you were my number one cheerleader, it got me through the rough days . I will miss our talks and visits (especially as Hilary makes a run for President, we would have had a good time chatting about that). I can still hear your laugh (snort) and I’m going to take that with me on this next chapter with out you. I will love you with all my heart , always always .
