Allen Lee Clark

April 15, 1949 - August 2, 2022

Obituary

Allen Lee Clark passed away surrounded by his loving family on August 2, 2022, after suffering a severe traumatic brain injury.

Allen, born April 15, 1949 in Missoula, Montana to Joseph and Bernice Clark, graduated from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in 1973. After working as a pharmacist for nearly a decade at Mannings Pharmacy, Warren’s Drugs and Clarks Prescription Shoppe, Allen’s entrepreneurial spirit and vision inspired him to found Medi-Rent, a durable medical equipment company, in 1983. Allen later sold the company to a national health care provider in 1996 and retained the physical medicine and modalities portion of the business, which came to be known as Performance Modalities, Inc. Allen subsequently expanded the business in 2001 to include respiratory and sleep services under the name Performance Home Medical. Allen sold Performance Home Medical in 2012 to a regional hospital system and remained as President and CEO until his retirement in January 2021. Over the years, Allen participated on many executive advisory committees and held active board seats with foundations and industry associations, including the Highline Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.

Allen always prioritized his family. He was home every night for dinner, and attended every band concert and sporting event of his two kids. He enjoyed “camping” in his RV (also referred to as his “man cave”), especially the family’s annual trips down to the Oregon coast. He also loved riding his Harleys on the open road, and cheering on the Seahawks and Huskies.

Allen is survived by his wife of 46 years, Aletha Clark; his children, Ward Clark (wife, Michelle) and Kendra Clark; his grandson, Levi Clark; his brothers and sisters, Wayne (wife, Terry), Rick (wife, Vera), Vicki (husband, Kevin), and Debbie (husband, Jim); and many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

A private celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the Clark family requests that donations be made to the St. Anne Hospital Foundation (formerly Highline Hospital Foundation) in honor of Allen’s legacy and memory.

Allen was never afraid of a little hard work. He was a passionate man who cared deeply for his family and his business. Allen will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Allen went to my high school and graduated in the same year that I did (1968).

I didn’t know him real well but remember him being in one of my pe classes.

However my family and I shopped regularly at Warren’s Drug store and I remember when Allen was a brand new employee there in the mid 1970s working side-by-side with Warren Lindblad, the founder and owner of the drugstore. His younger brother would visit him there sometimes too which was nice.

Allen was still pretty young then and the youngest pharmacist I had ever seen working in a drugstore. Warren Lindblad struck me as a boss who had high standards so I wasn’t sure how well Allen would work out there as young as he was. But he obviously survived and I remember continuing to see him work at Warren’s well into the 1980s.

God rest his soul and I’m glad that while in life he was able to find a career that worked out well for him.

Allen was a very astute business manager who was very well respected in the industry. He knew everyone’s name and always had a friendly comment if you ran into him. He had a very sharp mind and ran his company well. I am sorry to say I hadn’t seen Allen since I retired on May 5, 2019, but I have fond memories of him and Althea who were both such gracious employers. My sincere condolences to the Clark family.
