In Loving Memory of Alonzo Curtis “Curtis” Crawford
Alonzo Curtis Crawford, known as Alonzo to his friends and Curtis to his family, was born on April 28, 1958, to Willie G. Crawford and Odie Jean Crawford in El Paso, Texas. His journey took him to Seattle, Washington, where the Crawford family settled and Curtis began his education. Later, the family moved to Bellevue, Washington, where Curtis graduated from Sammamish High School in 1976.
With determination, Curtis pursued trucking school and embarked on a career in the transportation industry. For over 40 years, he hauled goods across Washington State and the country, ensuring the essentials reached their destinations. He had a deep appreciation for the open road and the sense of freedom it provided. His beloved wife, Madeline, occasionally accompanied him on long-haul trips; they loved the time spent together seeing the sites of the country.
It was at church that Curtis met Madeline. They began dating in the early 1980s and their bond deepened over time. On November 19, 1988, they exchanged vows, and from their union, their cherished daughter Ashanti was born. Curtis found immense joy in spending time with his grandson, Chase. Whether riding his Harley Davidson together, watching movies, or playing video games, their bond was filled with laughter and treasured moments.
Curtis and his family shared a deep love for the ocean, often taking trips to the scenic Oregon and Washington coasts. These getaways created memories that would last a lifetime. He enjoyed watching football and playing tennis. He really loved taking pictures, particularly of scenery. He especially loved fishing and enjoyed the fishing trips he took with friends and his brothers, embracing the camaraderie and the thrill of the catch. Curtis also had a passion for baseball, enjoying the sport both as a player and a fan. He played in several leagues, always ready to step up to the plate with enthusiasm.
Curtis was known for his infectious humor, always joking around and bringing laughter to those around him. Curtis lived life on his own terms.
On May 23, 2025, after recuperating from prostate surgery, Curtis set out on his motorcycle to pick up seafood from B&E Meats and Seafood in Des Moines. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, and it was a perfect day for a ride—one of those days that made him appreciate the open road. But tragically, his journey came to an unexpected end.
He was preceded in death by his father Willie, mother Odie, sisters Earnestine and Areva, and brother Elwood. He is survived by his loving wife Madeline, daughter Ashanti, grandson Chase, brothers Larry Crawford (Teresa) and Robert Parker (Christine), nieces Cheri Brooks, Dona Edwards (Troy), Nikki Brooks, Angela Parker, Alitza Evans, and Brandi Simmons (Darrell), along with nine great nieces and nephews, seven great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of beloved friends and extended family.
Curtis will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever ride with us in the memories we shared and the laughter he brought into our lives.
I’m going to miss my Uncle Curt. I’m so grateful I got a chance to see him in April. Pray for our family. Rest in Divine Peace Uncle ❤️
