Obituary

Andy Doria Salvador, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 1, 2011. Andy and his family celebrated his 86th birthday together just 2 days before his passing, on February 27, 2011.
Andy was born in the town of San Carlos, in the Province of Pangasinan in the Philippines. He was raised in a rice farming family and always mentioned to his children that he ‘hated every minute’ of it. Motivated by both the desire to join the forces that liberated his nation and to get out of the rice paddies, Andy joined the US Navy at Clark Airforce Base in the Philippines in 1945 after being rejected the first time for being underage. Thus, began Andy’s career in the US Navy which spanned 23 years until he retired as a Petty Officer, First Class, in 1967 at the Sandpoint Naval Air Station in Seattle, Washington. He served as steward, cook and chef. During Andy’s Naval career he circumnavigated the globe twice aboard destroyers. A good seaman, he amassed many medals including medals covering the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, World War II Victory, China Service, American Theater, Korean Service, American Campaign, Navy Occupation Service and numerous Good Conduct and National Defence Medals, and service stars.
Andy followed his Naval career with a career with the Washington State Liquor Control Board becoming the founding manager for the Package Store at the Sandpoint Naval Air Station. Andy managed the store for 20 years until his second retirement. In total, Andy served with and for the US Navy for 45 years.
On March 12, 1955 Andy married his grade school sweetheart, Filomena Padlan. Together, they had 4 children and raised their family in Seattle, Washington. They lived in the View Ridge neighborhood and were members of Assumption Parish for more than 50 years.
Andy was an avid sports fan and closely followed the local teams such as the Seahawks and the Huskies. He also enjoyed ‘games of chance’ such as horse racing, lottery and majhong and betting on the local teams such as the Seahawks and the Huskies. He was quite adept at gardening, growing vegetables and of course, cooking for friends and family. For those that knew Andy well, they know that he enjoyed attending and hosting parties as well.
Andy had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, The Filipino Community and the Pangasinan Association where he served as an officer for several years.
He is survived by Filomena Fely his wife of 56 years, son Gil Cindy, daughter Dione, son Alex Joyce, sons: Jacob and Brandon and Andy Gini, son: Andy; daughters: Ally and Anna. He was preceded in death by his sister Maura Salvador Galicia.

My sincere condolences to the entire Salvador Family. Andy had a wonderful life and truly exemplified a great American success story. Coming from the rice paddies in the Philipines to an honorary career in the US Navy and as a civil servant;a loving marriage of 56 years and 4 wonderful children and 5 grandchildren and his adopted son Juan. Andy deserved all these riches and more. He will be truly missed.

Our sincere condolences on the death of Uncle Andy. I remember him as a loving, caring and compassionate person. An ideal father, husband, grandfather, and helpful to his relatives and friends. A music lover, jolly and had a positive outlook towards life. Thank you Uncle for having me stayed at your house and the nicest things you did/help during my stay. Our thoughts and prayers are with Auntie and the family. We will miss him! May his soul rest in peace and let Perpetual Light Shine upon him.
