Angus Bud Carlisle Van Horne

February 4, 1922 – February 11, 2005

Bud was born in Lima, Ohio on February 4, 1922 to Merle & Stella Van Horne. He had three brothers—Robert who died in infancy, his older brother Elmer ”Van”, and baby brother Merle. His mother died when he was a baby and this required him to live with his grandmother. He spent his youth in a boarding school and left after 6th grade. As a youth he worked and lived above a bakery. When he was old enough he followed his older brother into the Navy.

During World War II Bud traveled the South Pacific as part of the Construction Battalion. After the war he was honorably discharged and lived with his brother Van in Oregon. While visiting a fellow CB in Seattle, he met his future wife. He returned to Oregon and told his brother about this girl he had met, and Bud said he would like to go back to visit her. Van said if he went, he would end up marrying her.

Bud and Georgia were married on January 1, 1948 and resided in their original house for 53 years. They had three children, Shirley Rae – 1949, Robert David – 1952: and Sandra Gay – 1957. His mother-in-law also resided with the family until her death in June of 1974.

Bud and Georgia joined Glendale in 1953 and immediately became involved members. Bud worked for Boeing for 30 years and after retirement became the church custodian for 8 years. After his retirement from Glendale, he continued to spend many hours in maintaining the church’s grounds and facility. He loved the people and the mission of Glendale and they were a large part of his life.

Bud and Georgia served in the USO Servicemen’s Lounge at SeaTac Airport. Bud’s experience in the Navy gave him a heart for Armed Forces personnel on the move. He also volunteered at Tape Ministries NW where he was a willing worker and was deeply loved.

Bud is survived by his daughter Shirley & husband Jerry Farris; favorite son Bob & wife Nancy; daughter Sandy, and his beloved grandchildren: Matthew & wife Kirsten, Amy, Julie, Steven, and Jamie. Also surviving him is his brother Merle & wife Vivian & children. Bud married into—and embraced—a large extended family in which some have already preceded him in death but many are with us today.

God took Bud to heaven on February 11, 2005. Bud’s life was his faith and his family. He taught us how to live a life of faith and in his death he taught us how to die in Christ.

Bud had a delightful sense of humor and was a joy to be around. He gave his family the gift of acceptance and peace in his last days.
