AUREA P. RUIZ

Our mother, Aurea P. Ruiz, joined her Creator on September 23, 2008 surrounded by family in Seattle, W A. Born in Penaranda, Nueva Ecija, Philippines on September 17, 1918. Her father, Vicente Tan-Padilla, a merchant and herbalist, was from Xiamen, China, and her mother was Maria Madrid, of Spanish heritage. The youngest child from a family of six children, ‘Auring’ was a bright child who was accelerated twice in grade school. She attended the Philippine Normal College when the Philippines was an American Commonwealth. Just before the Second World War broke out in the Philippines, she taught grade school in Nueva Ecija for a couple of years before her marriage to our father, Vicente B. Ruiz, a pilot. During her marriage, in addition to being a wife and mother, she attended business school and beauty school. She used her natural business talent in the restaurant, rice, onion, fertilizer and trucking businesses. As a wife, she served as hostess to social activities related to her husband’s profession in aviation.

She and her husband moved to the United States in 1981. She helped her husband in volunteer work at the Filipino Community Center and was given an award, together with her husband, Vicente for being Volunteer of the Year. She was also active in the Bataan-Corregidor Survivors’ Association. Together with her husband, she was also active in various religious and church activities, and donated the Statue of San Lorenzo Ruiz in St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Lakewood.

She is survived by her children: Harriet, Philip, Mary Joy and Glenn, her daughter-in-law, Cristina, her son-in-law, Robert Molleston, and her two grandchildren, April and Kristine May.

Viewing will be held at Bonney-Watson Funeral Home in Capitol Hill at 1732 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122 on September 26 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM and September 27 and 28 from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Requiem Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Parish Church at 314 South Fourth Street, Renton, WA 98057 on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Tahoma National Cemetery for US Veterans in Covington, WA. Reception will follow after internment at St. Anthony’s Parish hall.
