Obituary

Everyone knew that Barbara Rogers was excited by the move to Seattle three years ago. She has had fond memories of the Northwest since she last lived here in 1974. Barb and her husband had lived in Indianapolis prior to their move here..

Born Barbara Ann Hill she was the daughter of Florida Power and Light Vice-President Richard D. Hill and Emma Morris in West Palm Beach Florida. Her parents were “pioneers” in Florida having moved there in the early 1920’s. She was 16 years old when she graduated from Palm Beach High School. Upon graduation from high school Barb enrolled in John B. Stetson University in DeLand Florida. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. At Stetson, she met her husband to be, Robert Rogers. The courtship continued at a distance after Bob Rogers graduated.

The Korean War changed the couple’s plans when Bob joined the Army and was sent to Army Officer’s Candidate School. Barb and Bob married on May 16, 1951. After Bob’s commissioning, they moved to Ft McClellan Alabama where their first child, Robert Rogers, Jr. was born.

After her husband left the Army and entered the University Of Miami School Of Medicine they moved to Miami. Barb had her second child, Stephanie, during these years. Bob rejoined the Army and the couple had their third child, Cheri, at Fort Sam Houston Texas. Many moves followed including Seoul South Korea, Houston Texas, Honolulu Hawaii, Washington D.C., and Fort Lewis Washington. In all of these locations she was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader in addition to helping as a substitute teacher.

Her husband retired from the Army in 1974 and the couple moved to Indianapolis. After another retirement in 2000, Barb settled in Carmel and later Fishers Indiana. In 2010 Barb and Bob decided to move back to Washington State and chose Skyline Retirement Community at First Hill in Seattle  for their new home.

Over the years Barb has been an active tennis player and enthusiastically followed the game. She was a golfer and downhill skier.  Barb was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain. Barb served as a hospital volunteer in most of the Army communities where the family was stationed.

With her family she enjoyed classical music particularly symphonic music. She was a “rabid” Colts Football fan and season ticket holder from the day that the Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984. Even as she left  Indianapolis she was busily knitting blue and white hats for the planned Super Bowl XLVI.

Barb and her family enjoyed foreign travel, and her travel took her to every continent.

She was a lifelong Episcopalian and active member of the historic Trinity Parish Episcopal Church in Seattle.

She was an avid reader with a special affinity for mystery and adventure novels.

Barbara died on May 15.  She will be deeply missed by her husband Dr. Robert E. Rogers of Seattle Washington; son, Robert Rogers Jr.  of Derwood, Maryland; Daughters Stephanie Thompson  of Seattle Washington and Cheri Heck of Indianapolis, Indiana; Her grandchildren include Haley (Thompson)

Ballast, Travis Thompson, Courtney (Thompson) deGeest, Chase Thompson, Ashli (Heck) Keller, Michael Heck and eight great grandchildren

So sorry to hear about your beloved Barb. She was a funny, loyal and dear friend that we will always remember. Known in our household as the Energizer Bunny for her endless energy and determination, it is with fondness that we remember her during this difficult time. Many sympathies to the Rogers family from your former neighbors in Eden Glen.

Dear Bob,

I loved Barb very much…she was a great lady and very kind and giving. I so enjoyed our knitting ministry at your beautiful home on the lake in Fishers, IN. I also enjoyed having time together with you and Barb at your home, our home or out with friends. We do miss you but know how happy you have been in Seattle. I know she will be missed so much by you and family and friends. God Bless you and many prayers are with you.

Love,

Nancy
