Bertha Jinkens was born on March 28, 1922 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She was one of twelve children born to Percy W. and Bertha Pascal Ward. She died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at her home in Seattle, at the age of 87.
Bertha graduated from Garfield High School and Edwards Beauty School in Seattle.
She married James Jinkens a PFC in the US Army on October 3, 1943. They had 44 wonderful years together before James passed away August 22, 1987. To this union was born five daughters.
Bertha was a Christian woman. She loved the LORD, and cherished time spent reading her Bible daily. She was a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, active in the community and at Peoples Institutional Baptist Church where she was a long-time member. Bertha was an excellent cook, master gardener and loved her family and friends. She retired from Seattle City Light after 18 years of service in the printing production department. Her retirement years were spent in service to others, visiting, encouraging and caring for people who were sick, elderly or otherwise in need of a kind word or deed – she loved flowers.
Bertha is preceded in death by her husband, parents, nine brothers and one sister. She is survived by her five daughters: Evelyn Jones Harold Jones, Jocquelyn Duncan, Charelyn Stennis, Rosalyn Jinkens, and Gwendolyn Gainer John Gainer; one remaining brother, Roscoe Ward Katherine Ward, beloved niece and nephew Loreen Lockett and Floyd Williams, close family friend Annette Shumate, seventeen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of caring nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, good neighbors and friends.
