Obituary

Betty C. Strouts born Waldport, OR July 23, 1924 passed peacefully in Auburn, WA June 4th, 2005. Betty lived a life of family, joy, hard work and entertaining. A child of the Great Depression, she and her mother, Lillian Blair-Galloway, endured hard times with optimism, humor and familial devotion. Both entertained in USO shows and Betty headlined in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. A true-life “Rosey the Riveter”, she worked at Todd Shipyard during WWII then later retired from Boeing’s Renton Plant in the wire shop. A longtime member of ASCAP American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers she wrote numerous songs, had her poetry published nationally and internationally and was a gifted musician on the Hawaiian guitar. She was also a gifted singer, harmonizing beautifully with family and friends. Her artistic endeavors brought her interesting friendships with local celebrities such as Royal Brougham and Ruby Bishop. She was also a proud member of the Chippewa Nation of L’Anse, Michigan, the place of her mother’s birth. She loved her family, friends, country music and the Mariners. Gracing the lives of all who knew her, we were truly blessed to have her in our lives. Survived by son, David Barber and daughters, Lilly Strouts and Dawn Bouta. “I’ve been a lot of places friends,

Where I’ve never been before.

Heard eagles scream o’er the evergreens,

Then silence descends once more.”

Excerpt from original song, Emerald City, for her beloved Seattle. Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Renton Fire Department “Medic One” in her name.

Betty was my beloved friend for 65 years and will be forever in my thoughts. I can still see your pretty smile and beautiful brown eyes. Remembering, also, your dear mother, Lillian.
