Obituary

Blanche Adria Anna Drake Bruemmer was born in Mountain View near Ferndale WA, April 26 1919. She was the youngest of seven. Her mother Blanche Townsley Drake and father Joseph Thompson Drake came from Kansas around 1902 with their first two children. They joined the other hardy pioneers of the State of Washington. The family was involved in farming and the timber industry. Her father helped to cut and clear the land down the Puget Sound Coast.

She attended school in Everett and later moved to Port Angeles. There she met and married on August 21, 1938, Harold L Bruemmer, a Coast Guardsman from Tacoma. They were stationed from Oregon to Alaska tending several lighthouses in the 1940s. They started a family and eventually settled in Ballard where she lived for 58 years.

Blanche was a fun-loving and giving person who was active in Ballard Elks’ Emblem Club, Fleet Reserve Unit #18 and the many activities involving her five children. She was a wonderful cook. She is remembered for her Swiss Steak dinners that she prepared for various Masonic Lodges and Job’s Daughters fundraisers. Gardening was Blanches’ favorite hobby and her yard was always beautiful. Family was most important in her life and she loved and accepted everyone. She was never judgmental or critical of others.

Blanche passed away November 15, 2010 at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her children Leo Bruemmer Sandie of Mill Creek, Chris Baker Bill of Lake Tapps, Susan Skinner Lee of Ballard, Anna Bruemmer of Arlington and Adria Hedahl Ron of Snohomish. 10 grand children, 9 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Helene McKinnell of Spanaway and numerous family members. She will be greatly missed by all. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave N Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98109. There was a private family burial and there will be a celebration of life at a future date.
