Obituary

Brian Krag Landeck, 46, of North Bend, Washington, died Friday, March 4, 2005 as a result of injuries sustained in a climbing accident on McClellan Butte east of North Bend. Born September 29, 1958 in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of Kenneth and Mary Rose Landeck. He is survived by his brother Don, his Aunts Betty and Marge and Uncles Bob and Ollie and seventeen cousins and many, many second cousins who all loved him and will miss him very much.

As a child he was active in the Boy Scouts having taken backpacking trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in Northern New Mexico with his dad and brother in 1972, 1974, and 1976. Brian graduated from Wichita High School Southeast in 1976, where he excelled academically and was a letterman on the football team. Brian graduated With Distinction with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas in 1980 and was named a Summerfield Scholar. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1981. He received his Master of Science in Taxation from Golden Gate University in 1997. At the time of his death, Brian was an instructor at Golden Gate University where he taught courses in international taxation.

Brian began his career with the Internal Revenue Service in 1984 as a Revenue Agent in the Kansas City area office. He was transferred to the IRS International Division in Washington DC in 1985. During this time he traveled frequently to Canada and Europe as part of his duties. In 1994 Brian accepted an opportunity to move to the west, and transferred to Bellevue, Washington to manage a field audit team. In 1998 Brian was promoted to International Team Manager for the Large & Mid-sized Business Division with employees in Seattle, Portland, and Honolulu. During the past few years, he volunteered to teach several courses for the IRS, he served on multiple national task forces and was able to maintain contact with many of his friends from the Washington DC area.

In addition to his dedication to work, Brian had a passion for all his outdoor activities. He was a scratch golfer competing in several work related tournaments through his years with IRS. He was an avid backpacker having taken trips with his brother, and friends Todd and Dave to Rocky Mountain, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. He was also an avid mountaineer. He completed and instructed mountaineering courses with the Seattle Mountaineers. And he climbed mountains with his close friends and co-workers Gary and Jim all around the Seattle area. Brian summitted Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Grand Teton, and Mt. Whitney to name a few. He was training for an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro which was to have taken place this fall.

Brian loved and cared for his family and friends very much. He had a keen analytical mind and was a widely held technical leader in his field of work, born in part from his father. And he had a wonderful, dry sense of humor born from his mother. He cared deeply about his government service and the people who worked for him. And he passed much too soon, however, doing what he loved to do, to hike and climb in the mountains.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 16 at the Saint Bernard Chapel located at The Summit at Snoqualmie Ski area. A reception will follow at the Summit Inn. Donations in Brian’s name can be forwarded to King County Search and Rescue Association, c/o Roger Gregory, King County Search and Rescue Fundraising Chairman, 6462 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island, Washington 98040. Arrangements by Bonney Watson.

Brian;

Your folks & George now have their fourth for Bridge, but we are left with a huge void.

We miss you terribly and can’t believe we will never again have the chance to golf with you, laugh AT you when you fall off the dock, or watch you masterfully conduct “The Quiet Game” to the little kids.

Until we see you again, we will hold you close in our hearts.

Love always,

Donna & John
