Carl L. Helgren
Age 98, passed away on May 1, 2008. He was born on Sept. 17, 1909 in Poulsbo W A to parents who immigrated from Sweden and Finland. The family moved to New Westminster B.C. where Carl received his education and moved back to Seattle after he finished high school.
Carl’s first job at the age of 17, was with Western Union Telegraph Co. where he enjoyed a 25 year career. In 1952 he purchased University Travel and began a long rewarding career in the travel industry. He became active in the American Society of Travel Agents and served as International President of ASTA 1973-74. In 1989 Carl received the Rosenbluth Award – the travel industry’s highest individual honor.
Carl served as Honorary Consul for Finland in the State of Washington for 23 years. He was an active member of the University Rotary Club, Swedish Club, Order of Runeberg, WAC, Masons, Nordic Museum and was a founding director of the Swedish-Finnish Historical Society.
Carl was preceded in death by Frances, his wife of 66 years. They resided at Horizon House where he was active in planning the social events for the residents. He became known as the party planner. He always wanted people to have a good time.
He is survived by his daughter Grace John Easley; two granddaughters Jennifer Brian Swartz, and Jill Robert Zinns; four great grandchildren, Nathan and Madeleine Stencil-Swartz and Drake and Warren Zinns. Also, surviving are his niece Carol Barker of CA and nephew Victor Pomel of AZ. Carl was devoted to his family and cherished the times he spent with them.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Horizon House 900 Uniersity St., SeattlePerformance Hall on Friday, May 16 at 10:00 am. Remembrances in Carl’s name may be sent to the Horizon House Resident’s Assistance Program or to the Swedish-Finnish Historical Society.
To a great cousin that I never got to meet but talked to once on the phone. I will always remember the gracious sound of his voice and great heart that he had.
