Obituary
September 8, 1928 – January 25, 2024
Ballard born and bred, Carl Martin Johanson, a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and dear friend passed away at the age of 95, on January 25, 2024.
Carl’s Parents, Hilberg and Magdalene, along with their five children immigrated from Sandstrand, Norway to American in 1927. Carl was born in Ballard, the following year. The family then moved to a farm in Poulsbo in the early 30’s. As a youngster, Carl only spoke Norwegian until he attended elementary school. In the early 1940’s the family moved back to Ballard. Carl grew up in a traditional Scandinavian environment, with loving parents and a strong Norwegian work ethic.
Carl was confirmed at Ballard First Lutheran, where he was a lifelong member. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1946 and then served in the United States Navy Reserve. In the years that followed, he worked alongside his brother-in-law in the oil industry and later purchased Square Deal Fuel. In 1980 he sold his company to Olson Fuel, where he continued to deliver fuel until 1990, when he retired. For many years, Carl was also a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay, Alaska.
His infectious laugh, smile and loving eyes blessed many of us throughout his life. His love, devotion and wittiness to family and lifelong friends were genuine. He looked forward to, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his daughter Jann, and granddaughter Jade. Some of the other highlights in his life were fishing, golfing, and Husky football.
Carl is survived by his wife Ellen of 43 years, his daughter, Jann Johanson and son-in-law, John Straton III, granddaughter Jade Rettig, sister Helen (Konrad) Uri, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Johanna Ness, Ingvalda Johanson, Alborg Tomalin, Freda Peck, Sylvia Hoddevik and brother John Johanson.
