Obituary

Carol Jean Harkison 81, beloved mother and grandmother was called to be with the Lord after a brief illness Monday, June 27, 2022. She was born in Cando, North Dakota on January 2, 1941, to Willard and Edna Hall.

She is proceeded in death by her husband, Dale Harkinson, father, Willard Hall, and mother, Edna Hall and survived by her three children, Theresa DiMartino, Scott Crum, and Dana Chynoweth.

Besides her children, Carol is survived by her sister, Arlene Hoefer, sister, Sheree Hall, granddaughter, Jennifer DiMartino, grandson, Richard Boscolo, granddaughter, Jayna DiMartino, grandson, Justin Boscolo, grandson, Jordan DiMartino-Hills, great-grandson Lorenzo DiMartino-Hills and great-granddaughter, Layla DiMartino-Hills.

Carol spent her early childhood years in Cando, North Dakota and had many tales to share about growing up on a farm. Together with her family, she moved to Seattle, WA, at age 11.  She graduated from Cleveland High School in 1958 and went on to work at various business’ as a bookkeeper. She married Maurice Crum in 1960. They purchased a home in West Seattle where she raised her 3 children and lived there for more than 56 years.

She was an excellent cook and baker and was a frequent contributor of many recipes for Paula Deen’s KTCS cookbooks. Paula invited her twice to be a guest on her show, but being that she never liked being in the “limelight,” politely declined.

She loved the serenity of the outdoors and enjoyed hiking and skiing in her younger years. Being adventurous, her son, Scott taught her to sail later in life, and she and her husband, Dale had many fun times sailing the open waters on her sailboat, “The Peregrine.”

Her children have many fond memories of laughing and singing along with her while listening to her favorite music as do some of their friends!

Carol’s spunky character, sparkling eyes, and witty sense of humor will be greatly missed.

                The Rose

             By Bette Midler

Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
and you, its only seed

It’s the heart, afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It’s the dream, afraid of waking
that never takes the chance
It’s the one who won’t be taken
 who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose
