His friends called him Carrol, family it was Hugh, I called him dad. By the time he was 18, he had been around the world twice on merchant ships. When I came along he took a temporary job at Boeing, which he retired from 40 some years later, then continued to work until he couldn’t. He loved to take us fishing, sometimes crawling over logs 100 ft in the air to get to a place he’d heard of, or following charter boats into the ocean in a boat built for inland waters. In later years Greg and I would go panning gold with him, I’d ask him if he sees anything and he’d say “not much, just a couple of flakes”. We weren’t sure if it was gold or us he was talking about. He had a great sense of humor. He always worked hard, when he wasn’t at work, he built and remodeled houses, he could rebuild or repair anything. I sure do miss him. When I grow up I want to be just like him, I guess in a lot of ways, I am. Please forgive me for not making it up there, I’ll be in the Gulf of Mexico, working on a Drilling ship. He’s got big shoes to fill. My prayers go out to all, and may he rest in peace, God knows he deserves it. I love you Dad, your number one son, Rich
Grandpa was always a caring, hardworking, simple character who loved one liners and would always pick up a penny. A few of his favorite sayings were “Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like bananas”, and “I used to be a werewolf, but I’m not one NOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW”, and “What a system! Its got to be a system to be this screwed up!” He loved all animals and plants and most of all, he loved his family and would do anything for anyone who needed help.
