Charles Leo Jackson (Pop J), passed away peacefully August 8, 2020 at 97 years of age. He was born June 21, 1923 in Eudora, Arkansas. He was the third child of parents, Al Sanders Jackson and Anna Belle Jackson.
At a young age, Charles traveled to his oldest brother who worked at the railroad round house and acquired employment as well. By the 1940’s, at age 19, he traveled to San Francisco where he became an owner of a Speak Easy and this is where his love of jazz began.

Later he obtained a job working for City of Seattle Sanitation Department, retiring after 27 years. During this time, Charles loved coaching both boys Little League Baseball and Youth League Football in the Rainier Valley. He also became a Professional Baseball Umpire and a highlight was working the Major League Old Timer’s Baseball Game in the Kingdome.
In 1958, he became a member of the Musicians’ Association of Seattle. His interest in jazz lead and rhythm guitar was displayed in local venues throughout the city. Later he taught guitar for over 50 years. Even at age 95, you would see him at jam sessions every Monday Night in White Center. Charles was a strong and silent man and music was his voice. He was very loyal to his family, principles and to music. He also was an encourager and protector. His other interest included playing pool, cards, telling jokes and spending time with family and friends.

Thank you Daddy for always being there for me. You have always been my security, strength and quiet wisdom. You made me strong but helped when I wasn’t. Could always depend on you when there was no one else. I miss you Daddy. Until we meet again, I love you mostest.
