Obituary
Dana Lloyd SPRADLEY
was taken from us much too early at the age of 52. A resident of Seattle, Dana died unexpectedly on April 28, 2010 at home. Dana was born on December 20, 1957 in Glendale, California. He met his future wife Linda Garrido in college and they spent over 33 loving years together. He was the son of Andrew deceased and Shirley Spradley, and brother of Paul Spradley, all of San Pedro, California. He is also survived by niece Melissa Clark and nephews Ryan and Kyle Salem and numerous additional relatives and friends.
After studying math and considering a change to computer sciences, Dana graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1981 with a degree in Literature. He received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Yale University in 1989 and taught Renaissance literature and literary theory at Yale University, Harvard University and University of Wyoming. He transitioned from teaching to his other love of information technology to work as a Software Engineer for Oracle Corporation.
Dana created and maintained websites to involve others in his passions for Shakespeare, live performing arts and progressive politics. His knowledge, intelligence and wit will be missed forever.
A memorial service will be held May 15 in San Pedro, California.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dana’s name can be made to ArtsFund.org or American Heart Association.
Everyone can master a grief but he that has it. –Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act III, Scene II. It is with great sadness that I learned of Dana’s untimely death. My memories of Dana will always be of his great intelligence and sense of humor. My heart goes out to Linda and his family.
You’ve lost someone who was a special part of your family. May you all find comfort in each other and in all the deep concern that comes to you today.
Dana was a close friend and neighbor during our Eagle Rock High School years. Dana, his older brother Paul and I experienced some exciting and never to be forgotten “coming of age” moments!
Even though Dana and I lost touch in the late 70’s, many pleasant memories remain. Even with my limited life experience and young age during those high school years… I knew Dana would be one of the most intelligent people I would ever know.
Just moments before receiving the sad news of Dana’s passing I was enjoying listening to Van Morrison performing his anthem “Gloria”. I always think of Dana when I hear this song because I know it held special meaning for Dana back in those high school years!
My condolences to all of Dana’s family.
Linda, friends, family: How sorry I am to hear this sad news. My sincere condolences. Besides working together, Dana was a great friend and confidant to have. I valued his insights on a number of things and will always remember him.
