Obituary
Our beloved brother, nephew, uncle and friend, David Underhill, 58, died peacefully at his home on December 4, 2015. David is survived by his sister Barbara Baker, his sister-in-law Charlene Underhill, and 5 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Jeanne and Bud Underhill and his brother Mark. David graduated from Mt. Rainier High School in 1975. He pursued a career at The Boeing Company that spanned 38 years. David had a passion for drag racing and spent many days with his brother Mark and friends at the local track. He had an eye for a great find at garage sales which he frequented, and a passion for a fine automobile or truck that might come his way. David will be remembered as a loving man to his family, and a responsible and committed man to his job and his “Boeing family” which he enjoyed very much. We lost David far too soon, and he will be missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers please join our family in the celebration of David’s life at the Normandy Park Cove.
I have known and considered Dave a good friend since I was 13 year old at Olympic Junior High. He was one of those guys, and I only new a few, who everyone liked. He just had an easy way about him. I, like Dave was a big garage sailer, and saw him several times a summer at garage sales all around Des Moines. I’m sure we both cost each other a few good finds, because every time we ran into each other, we would have to talk and compare notes for about 45 minutes. I will dearly miss those garage sale chats….
As the “new kid” in 4th grade (having moved here from Ohio), I was quite nervous about all the changes in my life. One of the first classmates I met was Dave–and we immediately became great friends. With his good sense of humor, positive outlook on life, and ever-friendly demeanor, he was great to hang out with. The Underhill home and family was “ground zero” for many of us all the way through high school–and we always felt welcome as part of the family. Dave epitomized the concept of friendship–he was always willing to lend a hand and share a laugh. I will miss him, to be sure.
David! You will be missed by me. May you have win lights and bulls-eyes always.
David, my amazing work partner for 37 years. Thanks for always having my back. Rest in peace my friend. You will never to be forgotten. Peace to his family.
Dave,
As someone who recognized both the bad and the good of life….thanks for always being there to share thoughts.
Miss ya.
Dave, You opened my eyes to many things about Boeing and cars during the time we spent together. Thanks for sharing your passions with me during the 30 years we spent together making sheet metal parts at Boeing. It was a privilege to watch you race at SIR, and to share jokes and stories with you during long days at work. I miss your laugh and your smile.
Dave,
We worked together for many years.
Sure miss coming in to work and seeing the nod every morning.
I love and miss you Uncle Dave. You were always my rock when I needed you. I’m so happy you were at my new house and saw how the kids and I were. And that you said my Chex mix was better than Aunt Barbs 😉 sorry aunt Barb he said it. Lol. I got a ninja for xmas like you tried to get me after thanksgiving. I love you and give my daddy a hug and grandparents and Jason a love please. Xoxoxo
David,
If we only had one more day,
We had so many words to say.
And if we had only known,
God was coming to take you home,
We would have taken that one more day
To say we love you in every way.
To say we will miss your kindness, your humor, your smile, Your laugh, your words, and that extra mile.
We are so blessed to have known you,
So sorry to have lost you.
We will never forget you.
So to our loving brother, our uncle, our faithful friend,
We can say your family is at peace, the Underhill brothers
are together again.
Your Loving Family
Going to miss you so very much David, my most favorite brother-in-law. Another piece of our family gone, but never forgotten. Knowing you and Mark are together again gives me a great deal of comfort because the sadness and grief from losing you both is beyond what words can describe. So until we meet again you and Mark behave yourselves and enjoy all that Heaven has to offer you, peace, happiness, comfort and health. God’s love is wider, longer, higher and deeper than anything you have ever known and it is yours for eternity. Sending my love to you both….Charlene
Uncle Dave … it just doesn’t seem real. I keep thinking I can call you up and say “let’s meet for Chinese” and you’ll be there! I have so many memories of growing up with “Uncle Asshole” and I will forever treasure those memories. I will think of you every time I hear someone say “these ones” or I hear a motorcycle or Porsche start up. I love you more than words can ever say. Hugs forever – JJ
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Barbara.
I first met David at Boeing Plant II many years ago and have worked with him a occasional bases since. He always had a strong devotion in the Company and his job. David will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Dave,
Where do I start? You took a young “know-nothing” kid from IL and helped him in ways you will never realize. I truly learned a lot from you professionally and personally. Just having the opportunity to sit and talk to you was some of the best training I ever had and not to mention the time outside of work.
I won’t say goodbye but I will say “See you until we meet again!” You will be missed my friend!
To the family:
I can only imagine what Dave meant to you. Please know that you are in my prayers for your loss.
Cory
I was shocked to hear of David’s death so soon after Marks!
(I would be there today at the memorial, but I had partial knee replacement surgery this week.) David was such a friendly, kind man! We grew up as next door neighbors. Our moms were best friends and all of us kids played together for hours all over the neighborhood.
David was at my folks estate sale and purchased the items he knew would be a shame to just send to the goodwill. That was such a blessing to us. More than that was the friendship David extended to us over the many years.
Barbara, I am so sorry for your loss of both brothers this year! Grief builds on grief, so you must be really hurting. Praying for you and Charlene and your families. May the Father of all comfort wrap His loving arms around you.
Dave was my co-worker who quickly turned into a good friend through out our years of service together.Very smart and an asset to the company, a man who always had his ducks in a row before offering his opinion, or giving you yours. It is a sad deal we have with our maker, that our bodies must continue to break down and eventually give up. Our souls and spirits are allowed to continue on forever. When you hear these sounds off in the distance: the roar of Harley, a perfectly hit speed shift, that 2nd gear chirp… Dave
