Obituary

Dionisia Espiritu Acena passed away peacefully on February 13, 2012.  She was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, the daughter of Nicolas Espiritu and Marcela Nolasco.  Dionisia was the widow of Sergio P. Acena, Sr., who died in 1997.

Dionisia arrived in Seattle in 1948.  In May 1950 she married Sergio P. Acena.  She was a cosmetologist, and dietician.  Dionisia was active in the Filipino Columbians and in the women’s activities of the Knights of Columbus, Council 676, of which her husband Sergio served once as Grand Knight.  Dionisia cared for many foster children and in 1969 she was named Mother of the Year by the Knights of Columbus, Council 676.  She loved gardening, playing mah jong and cards, and attending church events.  Dionisia also enjoyed traveling with family and friends.  Her travels included London, Rome, and the Philippines.  She will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a happy, cheerful and loving person. 

 Dionisia is survived by her children: Sergio Jr. (daughter-in-law Trula); Marcella (son-in-law Richard); and Anne (son-in-law Keith).  She was adored by her grandchildren Emily, Sergio (TJ), Aaron, Anthony, Adrienne, and Benjamin. She leaves behind: her brother Dr. Librado Espiritu (wife Prudencia) of Vigan, Philippines; her cousin Albert Acena of San Mateo, California, Imelda Ayalin of Chicago, Illinois; her Garcia cousins in Southern California and in the Philippines; and her friends and caregivers at New Hope Healthcare, Mercer Island, Washington.

   A vigil and rosary will be held at Bonney-Watson, 1737 Broadway, on Thursday,      February 16, 2012 at 7 o’clock p.m. 

  • The Mass of the Resurrection will take place at St. James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Avenue, on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. 
  • Entombment will be at Holyrood Cemetery, 205 N. E. 295th St., Shoreline, following the funeral and reception.

Sorry to hear of the death of Dionisia Acena. It has been a long time since I have seen her but I do have good memoires of her. I will keep all of you in my prayers at the loss of your Mother and Grandmother. May she rest in peace. Sorry that I will not be able to attend the funeral. Fr. Dick

Death is the final event for entry into Heaven. May she watch over and pray for all relatives left behind. She will be miissed!

I am very saddened to hear lola Dionisia’s death. I am Eddie’s son from Vigan. I never had the chance to meet her but I know she will be sorely missed, especially by the people she loved and cared. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
