Obituary

Doris Lavilla Shearer, 99 of Monroe, WA. passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and loved ones on August 19, 2013. Doris was kind, she was generous and she was grace! She was a beautiful smile, a hearty laugh and the gentlest hug. To know her was to love her, and love her we did!

Doris was born in Chelan, WA. on November 3, 1913 to Charles and Sarah Hall. She was 1 of 16 children, of which only 8 would live to see adulthood. Doris attended Garfield and Broadway High Schools in Seattle, WA. She was also a champion swimmer at Leschi Park on Lake Washington. She married George Shoop on March 2, 1932 and they had 5 children. George passed away on December 14, 1967. In 1941 just after the US became involved in WWII, she went to work, for Boeing, Bemis Bag and eventually Darigold where she would retire after 25 years of service. Doris married Ray Shearer on August 17, 1968; they were married for 13 years before he passed away in 1981. She then moved to Monroe where she volunteered her time doing custodial work at the Monroe Senior Center. After over 10 years of service to the center, Doris received the JC Penney’s Volunteer Award and the senior center was able to purchase its first bus, with the money they saved due to her efforts. She volunteered her time there until 2004, when she was an impressive 90 years old.

A devoted mother and picture perfect grandmother, family was her pride and joy. Doris loved watching baseball, playing her organ, pinochle, Bunco with friends, puzzles and crafts. She is best known and remembered for her famous molasses cookies, her flawless potato salad, her handmade dish rags, aprons and pot holders that she wrapped up for Christmas gifts every year, her extensive doll collection, her beaded necklaces, her ability to play Skip Bo for hours on end and her almost always spotless home! She was the matriarch of a family that loved her dearly. She was an angel on earth in every sense of the term, the most loving, kind, goodhearted person you could ever meet. Hardworking, loyal, forgiving and compassionate, she was like no other, our safe haven, our constant, and the steady of our world. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, family and strength. She will live on in the hearts of the many whose lives she touched and we are all better for having known this woman who lived with grace, honesty, loyalty and love.
