Obituary
Doris Mary (Higgins) Hillson, 90, returned to God on Saturday, June 9, 2018 in Seattle. Doris was born to George and Florence (Bakewell) Higgins in Faith, South Dakota. on February 29, 1928. She married Melvin in 1945 and they settled in Seattle area in 1959. After Melvin’s death in 1973, Doris showed amazing resolve, graduating from Seattle Central College to become a nurse and continue raising her family.
A caring and compassionate woman, she touched the lives of her children, and many others. She was an example of Faith, love and selflessness throughout her life .Doris was a long-time parishioner of St. Alphonsus Parish (Seattle), a proud Seattleite and faithful Mariner fan. Among many activities, Doris especially enjoyed quilting, solving puzzles, genealogy, collecting china, gardening and canning/preserving vegetables and fruit. She shared her enjoyment of these pastimes with her children and grandchildren.
As Doris peacefully drew her last breath, she was surrounded by the love of her family. She is preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, eldest son (Kenneth), parents, and siblings (twin brother Dean, Gerald, and Lorraine Houghton). She is survived by her children: Kathleen Krause (Lynnwood), Bernadette (Marblemount), Geraldine Hanley (Seattle), James (Goffstown, NH), Michael (Bothell), Sharlene Castillo (San Pedro, CA), Christopher (Marblemount) and Matthew (Lynnwood), along with nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Louise Parish (Bellevue) on Saturday, June 16 at 11:00am, followed by interment Holyrood Catholic Cemetery (Shoreline). The family thanks the compassionate physicians, nurses and hospice personnel at Swedish Hospital, Cherry Hill.
Our deepest sympathies and love to all. Please know we’ll be with you in spirit on Saturday as you say goodbye and then celebrate a wonderful life
Aunt Doris was a very special lady. We loved visiting with her and the family on our visits to Seattle. Sending our prayers and love to all of you.
With our deepest sympathies.
Love ya bunches
Deepest sympathies to you all at the passing of Aunt Doris.
My sympathy to all of you, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Doris was a good wife and a good mother. She will be sorely missed but now we know she is not suffering, she is not in pain, and she is not facing the possibility of a long debilitating side affect. For that we can be glad.
Our current sorrow will gradually fade as we accept the fact that she is probably better off than we are.
Love to all Pat and Jim
Remembering a good friend ~ heartfelt condolences to the Hillson family.
Fondly,
Joan Smith
Sincere sympathy from Joan, Nora, Christie, Felix, Patrick, and Kevin Smith
