Obituary
Edith Schock Long
March 12, 1926 – October 16, 2010
Age 84, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at Judson Park, her childhood sweetheart Marvin by her side. Edith lived fully and left us all better for it. A long time resident of Normandy Park and later the Judson Park Continuing Care Retirement Home, Edith grew up in several eastern Washington towns including Pomeroy, where her love story began with Marvin when they were 14. They married on August 24, 1947, while completing undergraduate degrees at the University of Idaho. They lived in Pasadena, California and Wichita, Kansas before settling down in Normandy Park, Washington to raise their family.
Edith was never idle and pursued the role of Boeing wife and mother with all of her heart. She was a wonderful cook and loved nothing better than being surrounded by her family at birthdays and holidays. Hands flying, she could knit and crochet with her eyes closed and made wonderful baby blankets for children, grandchildren, and friends. She was a leader in the Boy Scout community, not only giving her time for many years as a den leader and Troop 392 Committee Chairwoman, but also making sure her four sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. For her many years of service, leadership and guidance she was honored by the Chief Seattle Council with the Emerald Pin Award. She loved the outdoors and traveling, and the family spent many weekends camping, skiing, hiking, and huckleberry picking in the Cascade Mountains. Morel mushroom hunting was a particular pleasure as were the many weeks spent at Wapato Point on Lake Chelan. A favorite family memory is the three-generation jet-boat trip through Hell’s Canyon on the Snake River in 2003.
Edith was a wonderful mother. She enthusiastically supported her children in all of their endeavors. She and Marvin frequently went on trips to visit their sons Lorin and Randy during their Air Force careers and never missed a promotion or retirement ceremony for either. She was a tireless correspondent, sending weekly packets full of newspaper articles, as well as recipes and the latest news. Edith enjoyed her weekly excursions with her daughters-in-law and always looked forward to a girls’ day out.
A devoted grandmother, Edith made a special effort to attend music recitals, gymnastic meets, soccer matches, baseball games, and followed her two grandsons’ scouting careers with great interest. She was very proud of all her grandchildren’s accomplishments and her eyes always lit up whenever they entered the room. We love you grandma.
Edith was preceded in death by childhood brother John, and by her mother Mary and father Eldon. She will be greatly missed by her husband Marvin; her son Lorin and wife Merry Kay and their two children Chris Katie and Risa; her son Ken and wife Rena; her son Randy and wife Julia and their two children Hannah and Ben; and her son Brian and wife Julie.
Memorial services will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 19030 8th Avenue South, Seatac, Washington on Saturday November 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ‘BSA Troop 392’ and mailed to John Knox Presbyterian Church, 109 SW Normandy Road, Normandy Park WA 98166.
forever in our hearts, you will be with us always. not a day goes by that Julie & I don’t think about you you & all things you did for us & meant to us. with all our hearts & love, Brian & Julie
