EDWARD L. KIDD

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Ed passed away peacefully on June 14, 2009, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his mother and father, Leonard and Vera, and older brother, John. Survived by his sisters, Caroline Crabtree and Joan Olson, husband Ed, three children Marge Garrison husband Marvin, J. David Kidd wife Laurie and Joey Zimmerman husband Jim and two grandchildren Brian and Steven Kidd.

He was born in Renton February 12, 1920 and his family soon moved to West Seattle where Ed attended Holy Rosary grade school. Ed graduated from West Seattle High School in 1938 and began his city career with the Seattle Water Department. He joined the Navy in 1942 serving until he was honorably discharged in 1945. On October 10, 1944 he married Mary Logan and by the early 1950’s they had three children. After World War II, Ed focused his attention on raising his family and completing his education. He was employed by the City of Seattle in his chosen field of accounting with career milestones of being promoted to Chief Clerk of the Park Department, Chief Accountant of the Comptroller’s Department and elected as City Comptroller in 1975. He retired at the end of his first term as Comptroller in 1979 with forty-two years of service to Seattle.

Married for sixty three years, Ed and Mary lived in West Seattle from 1946 to 2006 with their last home on Gatewood Hill that they occupied from 1968 until 2006. After retiring, Ed and Mary spent time enjoying their family, especially their grandchildren. During retirement Ed continued to be active in many associations including serving as a director and also as chairman of the Seattle City Credit Union and as a member of the Association of Retired Seattle City Employees. During his life he was a parishioner of Holy Rosary and later Holy Family Catholic church in West Seattle and lastly St. Brendan’s of Bothell.

Ed will be remembered for his dedication to his family and for his affinity for accounting. He liked to stay busy and helped many of his friends by keeping the books for their businesses and preparing income tax returns. Even during his last year, his caregivers would comment that he usually spent some time each day using his adding machine. Ed touched many lives and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

His family is especially thankful for the care he received at the Golden Hearth Residential Family Home and for making the time he was there meaningful and enjoyable.

A celebration of life and Mass will held on Friday, June 26, at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Burien, 15236 21st Ave SW, followed by internment at Washington Memorial Park and a reception at their chapel. I’m so sorry to hear of Ed’s passing – I was in the same 1938 West Seattle High class. We were the only one’s to return out of 400 for a reunion. He was always a gentleman and fun to visit with. I love his daughter Margie too – worked with her at the Port of Seattle for many years
