Obituary
Eileen McBride Scallon Evans
Eileen Allana, “Eileen, my darling”, her father’s tender Irish endearment, resurfaces again as our beloved mother’s rich life draws to its full conclusion. As a result of congestive heart failure, our dear mother passed away August 16th, 2010. Her recent 90th birthday, however, was celebrated in health, and with a large circle of family members.
Born Eileen Cecelia to Matthew and Mary McBride on June 1st, 1920, she was raised in a large Irish-Catholic family. She enjoyed a happy life in both Seattle and Chehalis, where her father administered branches of three major railroad lines. Growing up on Capitol Hill, Eileen attended Holy Names Academy, and later met her husband, Vincent, while attending Seattle University. At these schools, she remained active for decades as a cherished alumnus. Vince and she lovingly raised four children: Gregory, Michael, Patricia, and Timothy. Her love of children extended to her career as an elementary school teacher for over 40 years in both the Seattle Public Schools and later, in Seattle Parochial Schools. She was twice awarded Teacher-of-the-Year in her long and productive career. As summers arrived, the family left for vacation on Bainbridge Island, and later on Whidbey Island, for a few months of relished fun and relaxation.
In later years Mom married Marshall Evans of St. Paul Minnesota, and they enjoyed precious years together, and traveled to such destinations as Europe, Alaska, and Panama. Sadly, Marshall passed away several years ago.
Eileen was a former member of St. Joseph’s Parish on Capitol Hill, and for the past 45 years, a member of Our Lady of the Lake Parish in north Seattle where she became president of the Maids of Mary Guild. Other activities included The Literary and Travel Club, dance groups, hosting elderhostels, and routinely serving the poor at Saint Francis House in Seattle. She enjoyed extensive traveling, and found great delight in revisiting Ireland. Eileen also found great joy in all types of dancing, including folk and ballroom.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, and her husbands: Vincent Scallon and Marshall Evans, and siblings: William, James, and Sister Margaret McBride of the Order of the Holy Names. She is survived by her dear sister, Mollie McBride Carey of Bellevue, her children Greg Carole Scallon, Mike Joanne Scallon, Patti Michael Oliver, and Tim Brenda Scallon. In addition, she boasts eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Rosary on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 10:15 a.m. will be followed by an 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Lake Church 8900-35th Ave. N.E., Seattle. Arrangements are being handled by Bonney-Watson Funeral Home.
Our beloved mother is now at peace, and we are grateful for the richest of memories she carefully and generously provided throughout her long and full lifetime. For all who knew her, her sparkle and love of life was undeniable. She will be deeply missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed at:
