Obituary

Elizabeth Ann Cockrell Wooten was called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 30, 2006, joining her parents, two brothers, James and Henderson Cockrell, and her three sisters, Opal Foster, Virgie McWashington, and Lillie Hazel Aycock.

Elizabeth, the third of 6 children, was born to Virgil Cockrell and Lenora Tarver Cockrell on December 14, 1922. As young children, she and her siblings were reared by their Uncle James and Aunt Elizabeth Tarver Cockrell, “Nanny” and “Dad”, after the passing of their parents.

Elizabeth accepted Christ at an early age. She attended elementary school in the community of Boone’s Bend and attended high school in Wharton, Texas where she graduated as valedictorian of her class.

She moved to Houston to join her sisters, where she worked as a nurse’s aide among other jobs. She was working as a waitress at a café near the cab stand where her future husband Hayes, who drove a cab.

After Hayes moved to Seattle, Elizabeth later followed him there and they were married on April 21, 1947. To this union, two daughters were born: Verleeta Marie and Wanda Jean.

In 1950, Elizabeth joined Bethel C.M.E. Church, now named Curry Temple C.M.E. She was a dedicated and active member, serving in the following capacities: attending Sunday school regularly, serving in Senior Choir, Gospel Choir, and as building fund secretary. Elizabeth also served on various Mammoth Tea committees and wherever her skills and talents were needed.

She was involved in community activities such as being a Blue Bird and Campfire leader for 8 years. She taught the young women in her group how to sew, embroider, camp, cook, and how to work together toward a common goal. She was a talented seamstress who made clothing for church groups and friends.

Elizabeth was a very important member of her extended family, taking care of many of her nieces and nephews. She leant an understanding ear and positive attitude to family members and was always willing to share her abundant wisdom and love. She was often the calm during rough times.
