Obituary

Ellsworth “Pete” and Marion “Pat” Eberth

Ellsworth Pete E. Eberth, 93, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, in St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, Wash. He was born on Dec. 2, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated as an electrical engineer from Armor Technical College in 1933. Later that year, on Nov. 4, he married his beloved wife Marion Pat to whom he was married for 70 years. She died of a stroke on July 17, 2004. She was born on Jan. 28, 1912, in Petaluma, California.

Mr. Eberth and his wife camped, hiked and swam often during the early years of their marriage while he worked in the steel mill. In 1940, they moved from Chicago to Burbank, Calif., when he took a position at Lockheed. After the war, he invented California Fireplace Crystals, a chemical mixture that caused fireplace flames to burn in different colors. This led to his owning a successful business that also imported English brass plaques and fireplace tools, artificial flowers from Hong Kong, and other decor items. He sold the business and retired in 1967. They moved from Burbank to Lakeside, Oregon, near Coos Bay and began traveling the world, leaving the northwest for a couple of months each year. When at home at the lake, they frequently entertained friends and enjoyed nature, from fishing to crabbing to digging clams. He was a photographer and wood carver. She excelled in needlepoint.

After 25 years at the lake, they moved to Federal Way and then Milton, Washington, to be closer to their daughter and granddaughters. They lived at Surprise Lake until Mrs. Eberth’s death. At that time, Mr. Eberth moved into an apartment at Foundation House in Federal Way.

They are survived by their daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Carl Sells of Vashon Island, Washington; two granddaughters, Jennifer Humbert of Houston, Texas, and Sabrina Bradrick of Vashon Island and husband Matt; great granddaughter Madison Bradrick of Vashon; nephew, Don Townsend of Mill Valley, Calif., nieces, Kathy Coulter of Poway, Calif., and Carol McKay of Saratoga, Calif., and Pat’s sister, Jan Swift, of San Jose, Calif.

There will be no funeral service. Those who wish to may make a contribution to their favorite charity in the Eberth’s memory.

Arrangements entrusted to BONNEY-WATSON, Washington Memorial, 16445 International Blvd, SeaTac, WA 98188, 206 242-1787. Please sign the online memorial at www.bonneywatson.com
