Elsie Coy Alley McCormick
May 18, 1921- August 6, 2009
Elsie was born in Catawba, North Carolina on May 18, 1921. She attended Balls Creek Consolidated School and continued her education at the Women’s College in Greensboro, N.C now UNC at Greensboro. She graduated with a BS in Home Economics. From July 1944 to March 1947 she was the assistant home agent in the State Agricultural Extension Service for Cleveland County based in Shelby, N.C. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Jack McCormick, while he was stationed with the Army in North Carolina. A week later, he called his mother and said that he found the girl he was going to marry. They married on Dec. 9, 1945, just days before he was sent overseas. She joined him in Heidelberg, Germany from March 1947 to May 1948, until his tour of duty was over. They moved back to N.C. so Jack could get his degree in aeronautical engineering at UNC in Raleigh. They moved to Seattle, where he was recruited by Boeing in 1952. They moved to their house in Normandy Park in 1955. Jack preceded her in death in 1985, just three days before their 40th anniversary.
Elsie dedicated her life to faith, family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and talented seamstress. She spent countless hours working on quilts with the gals from Prince of Peace Church and was an integral part of the church, providing many functions in her loving, efficient manner. She loved to watch Mariner games and her soaps and would sit at her table bird-watching. She was always up for a game of Scrabble or a crossword puzzle. Bunco had been a monthly activity for over 55 years. Her schedule book was filled with activities as much or more than people half her age. She was an active, caring, generous person, who always thought of others first.
She is survived by her three children; Barbara Erwin Wendell, Sandra Craig Mel, and Bill McCormick Debbie, four grandchildren; David Landis Erika, Devin Erwin, Courtney and Simon Craig, and two great-grandchildren; Kasey and David Wayne Landis Jr. DJ.
Elsie will truly be missed by all who knew her.
