Obituary

Elsie M. Dell SHOGREN

Elsie Marian Dell was born in Rochelle, Illinois on January 22, 1909 to Anthony and Jennie Gini Dell, the only girl in a family of eight. Elsie died two weeks shy of her 104th birthday on January 8th, 2013 at the Norse Home in Seattle. Around 1916 the Dell family moved to Seattle where Elsie graduated from Saint Edward Catholic School and Franklin High School. She completed one year of business school. Elsie married Linus Florentin Shogren in September of 1937, and was happily married until Linus’ death in November of 1997. Their only daughter, Linea Marie, was born in August of 1938, and lived only three months. Elsie worked as Head Cashier for Sears in Seattle, California, and Arizona. Elsie and Linus eventually settled in the Ballard area, and moved to the Norse Home in 1993. Elsie was a founding member of the Norse Home Readers Theater, and took part in many activities at the Norse Home. Elsie enjoyed reading, traveling, crafts, baking, socializing, and being around children. Elsie cultivated many friendships over the years, and was very proud of her large Italian family. The family would like to thank the staff at the Norse Home and her Group Health Hospice Team for the loving care Elsie received. These people were instrumental in letting Elsie live the life she wanted until the time of her death. Elsie was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Her funeral will be held at Saint John the Evangelist Church, 121 North 80th Street in Seattle, on January 23rd at 10:00 AM. A reception will follow.

I did Elsie’s taxes for about 10 years at the Norse Home as a volunteer for the Tax Aide Program. I always admired her friendly demeanor and her amazing genes. She still had her natural black hair. When I saw her two years ago at age 102, she asked me to pray that she would die in her sleep. I hope that her wish was granted. She was an amazing woman. I’ll miss her.
