I will treasure the short time I was privileged to be able to share with your mother. What a beautiful, and much adored woman. Your family is an inspiration in what it means to take care of and love those closest to you. My deepest sympathies.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Ms. MacKinnon’s family. The loss of one so dear is very painful, that is why the Bible calls death our enemy. But, please be encouraged to know that God promises to do away with sickness and death forever-1 Corinthians 15:26; Revelation 21:3,4. It is my sincere hope this comforts your hearts.

My memories of Aunt Elsie will be those of her faithful visits to see her Mom and her brothers and sisters and their families gathering together at our infamous family get-togethers where we sang the same songs year after year after year until you actually know what song would follow the next one.

Aunt Elsie faithfully sent Christmas cards and birthday cards always personally penned with a beautiful handwritten scripted note. I always thought she had the prettiest handwriting! Then in recent years I could tell that her health was declining from her fragile handwriting, but her faithfulness endured until this past Christmas when we received a typewritten form letter, but not without a personal note from Trish who is following in her Mother’s beautiful footsteps.

I think of Aunt Elsie often and will forever keep her in my heart.

I find it so hard to believe Aunt Elsiea is gone and I won’t see her when I come to Seattle or talk to her on the phone. Even though we live far away and have not been able to visit often, we have always kept in touch; and Aunt Elsiea has always been there for us, for me personally. Leilia and I know she loved us like her own and have loved her dearly in return. Words fail to express the empty place she has left in our hearts and lives; but we know we shall be reunited in the eternal resurrection.

Mama recalls how kind Elsiea was to her growing up. She always combed Mama’s hair; and when all Mama had was one dress to be washed and worn over and over to school, her sister Elsiea bought her a skirt and 2 blouses — what a treasure to a young girl just starting high school. I remember how Mama and Aunt Elsiea laughed and laughed through the years. It seems to me they enjoyed each other’s company as much as anyone I’ve ever known.

When I was six years old, Elsie bought me my first ice cream cone, butter pecan!

Elsie used to take me, her little brother, roller skating with her girlfriends to the Ringing Rocks Skating Rink and I tagged along to Hickory Park.

I remember one time when we were stranded in a blizzard in the Dakotas…

I used to have to brush her hair 100 times for a nickle!

I especially remember the occassions that we rendezvoued in Maiden Canyon Montana, one in particular when Elsie’s hushand Bob and Trish and I climbed to the top of a mountain, Bob and Trish being in tremendous shape compared to ole’ Bob here.

I’m going to miss my sister’s faithful cards and phone calls.

I’m going to cherish my memories of Elsie forever.

I have many fond memories of Elsie. You could always talk to her about anything.

In June of ’57, Pop Phillips tragically died on the farm. I was pregnant at the time with my fourth child and was not feeling well. After Pop’s funeral Bob, who was also in the Air Force at the time, home on leave for Pop’s funeral, was taken to the hospital in Dover. I never felt so alone. I will be forever grateful to Elsie for going back to our apartment in West Ocean City to help me take care of our three children, Terry, Cathy and Butch. During that time, I gave birth to a baby girl, Patricia Alice, who was born prematurely and only lived 14 days. I remember waking up in the hospital to find a brush and comb set and some perfume too if I remember that Elsie left for me by my bedside.

I will miss her.

Dear Trish, Scott, Rachel and MacKinnon family,

Although I did not know your mother well children are often a reflection of their parents. Believing this and knowing what loving, strong and beautiful daughters you are she was a very special lady. May you find comfort in knowing she is at peace and that our prayers are with you.

I must admit, I knew Elsiea from my former workplace, Nordstrom, Southcenter. From my days in “pantyhose” to “women’s clothing” especially blouses….this petite, sweet woman talked as if she were built like a “Mac” truck…Elsiea’s heart was truly as precious as her gracious personality. Ironically enough, I met Elsiea’s daughter, Roberta, years after at Norstromand come to find out they were mother & daughter. We also lived in the same neighborhood, and many other likenesses…I do thank God for connecting our hearts; from “pantyhose to Snickerdoodles!” I love you…

Elsiea,

You and Roy Olson my step Father have been lifelong friends since childhood in Grass Range, Montana.

When he married my Mother and brought us to Seattle you and your family welcomed us into your home and hearts.

After Mom died you called on a regular basis to ask how he was doing, although he now has dementia please allow me to speak for him and send his thanks for the deep devoted friendship you have shared. And allowed me to share as well. May you fly with Angels and know you have deeply touched me. You will always remain special our hearts.

I was sorry to hear about Elsiea’s passing. I enjoyed being in Circle with her at Glendale in my early married years – she was a very sweet person. I still have a cookbook that she gave to me when I was in the hospital with our daughter Carolyn, who had problems at birth and we weren’t sure she would make it. The Lord allowed her to flourish and she is now a Marriage and Family Therapist in Everett with her own family. We enjoyed using Elsiea’s daughters as babysitters. Sharon was with us on one of our camping trips Carolyn was 6 months, so there are fond memories there.

The message came through in her Christmas notes that Elsiea was proud of her children and grandchildren. I looked forward to her card each year. I will miss that correspondence.

God bless you all as you carry on – with her in your memories.

Trish, Kim, Roberta, and Larry-

Growing up together on 196th Street brings back tons of memories. I always thought it was so cool having your cousins Diane and Leilia living across the street from my family. Your Mom was always there for our family and I know when my Mom was working she relied alot on Elsie for the “built in babysitters”, car pooling to school and many other endless things our families shared. I’m so thankful I was able to spend a brief weekend with my Mom, Elsie, and Trish at Chelan a few summers ago. I think both our Moms needed that. Your Mom was never wavering in her beliefs and she always spoke what was on her mind. I feel very honored to have know Elsie since childhood. May she rest in peace free of pain.

Warm Regards, Diane

She was like a second mom to my sister Chelsea and I. She was our daycare person before we were school aged. The MacKinnons were such a wonderful family and we felt we were part of it. Robert taught us to spit cherry seeds and the sisters baby sat us when Elsie needed a break.

Much love and great memories.
