Obituary

Emma Caroline Etzel Albrecht

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

Born on July 5th, 1915 on the prairie near Redwater, MT, died at home in her sleep on April 28th, 2008. Emma was the first of twelve children born to Anna Mahlstedt and Carl Etzel. In 1937, with an aunt, uncle and two sisters, she moved from the eastern Montana farm to Seattle. She attended Moler Beauty College and graduated in 1939. Emma met her future husband, Otto Albrecht, while attending beauty school. They were married on June 6th, 1942.

Emma worked as a beautician until her children were born and then was a stay-at-home mom. After her husbands’ death in 1964, she went to Ballard Beauty School to brush-up on new beauty techniques and did part time beauty work for seven years. She also worked in the diet kitchen of Ballard Hospital for a time and cooked the main meals for the 20 Dominican sisters at St. Alphonsus Convent for 18 years

Emma was an excellent cook and baker. She also loved to work in her flower and vegetable gardens and always made sure that her raspberry bushes were taken care of so they would provide enough fruit to make her great raspberry freezer jam.

Preceding her in death were her husband, two brothers, and six sisters. Emma is survived by one brother, Carl Etzel Jr. of Missoula, MT., two sisters Katherine Kitty Wilson of Savage, MT. and Carmen Billie Van Horn of Beach, ND, three daughters; Carolyn Rose of Shoreline, Barbara Leggett of Aberdeen and Marie Cyphert of Seattle, five grandchildren: Albert Leggett, Travis Rose, Annette Beltrand, Tera Cyphert and Donna MacDonald; one great-child, Warren Leggett and one foster great-grandchild, Todd Norris, as well as many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and over forty nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery following mass.

There are many wonderful memories of Emma from my years of teaching at Holy Angels. She was in the kitchen every day, cooking great dinners for us in the Convent. She always had a smile and was so friendly to all of us. I’m sure it was a hard and exhausting job, which didn’t end at 5:00, since she would go home to three teenagers. But such wonderful girls!

Sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I remember Carolyn and Barbara and especially Marie. Marie was always so special to me and she still is.

Cyphert Family,

I am so sorry to hear about ”Grandma” passing but I know that she is rejoicing with the angels in Heaven & you all now have another Guardian Angel watching over you. It brings a smile to my face when I think back to her warm welcomes when I’d come over to play at the house & I will continue to treasure those memories. My deepest sympathy,

Ani

Grandma – Happy thoughts of you in every corner of this house; they will live in our hearts forever. You made us a strong family and for that I am proud. You will be missed greatly but you were ready to join with your family. Never far from our hearts or our thoughts – I love you…

Mrs Albecht was a hard and fast worker. She was always cheerful and did her best to treat the sisters with delicious, healthy meals. I have very fond memories of her kindness and her ever-ready smile! Thanks to her family for sharing the kindness of this lovely woman with us.
