Erik Smock

August 23, 1960 - December 4, 2023

Obituary

Erik was born in Seattle on August 23, 1960. He is survived by a large loving family, including his wife Julia, who he was married to for 26 years; sons Justin (Shelby), Robert and their mother Susanne; granddaughters Myly and Tori; brother Cameron (Shannon); sisters Patrice (Mark) Sinclair and Christie (Terry) Engel; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Erik was raised in Seattle, Bellevue and Ephrata Washington. He lived in Renton since his 30s and was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, where he met his wife, Julia. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Helene Smock in 1999 and 1995.
Erik enjoyed many things, and being an avid Seattle Seahawks fan was one of them. Erik had a lifelong passion for cars and continuing education. He was blessed with a long career in the Automotive Repair program at South Seattle Community College where he taught and mentored many high school and college students. He remained good friends with several graduates throughout his life. He retired suddenly after being diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer during the pandemic.
Another love of Erik and Julia’s was the beach. They visited Ocean Shores regularly and often stayed with Patrice and Mark. Their special places include the North Jetty, any beach, their property on the Grand Canal, driving as far north on the beach and as far south as possible with his best friend and true love Julia by his side. They especially enjoyed Mark and Patrice’s home, where Erik chose to spend his last months. He passed away December 4, after a very brave fight, with Patrice and Mark by his side and family nearby.

One of Erik’s favorite sayings was, “Meet me at the Sea.”

Erik was my naughty, funny [second] cousin, whose energy was like fizzy pop (protecting his tender heart). I felt his warmth and loving support from afar for years, and still feel it. May you all feel it, dear family, along with my gratitude for how well you cared for him.

Living in Minnesota and Wisconsin all my life, I didn’t spend much time with my cousin Erik. I especially remember a good conversation I had with him years ago and his enthusiasm and love of family.
