Obituary
Esther Fields, 82, passed on March 02, 2022. She was born to Maurice Garfield in Dallas, Texas on June 14, 1939. Esther was the first of three children.
At an early age, Esther moved to Chicago with her mom. She left home at an early age and became a caregiver of young children. In the late 1950’s, she met Julius Cesar Fields, got married and had her first two children. In 1963 the family moved to Washington State where the last two children were born.
Her career started here at Swedish Hospital as a Nurses Aid, and then moved into janitorial work.
In 1971 she then started her career working at Seattle Metro as a Bus Driver and was passionate about affecting the most positive changes in people. This did not stop here at work. She was a mother to all and accepted anyone who came into her life. She also was the first black woman driver to drive and train people in the articulated buses. In 1985, Esther was honored with the 14 Years Safe Driving Award at Seattle Metro.
Esther loved to ride motorcycles in her younger years. She enjoyed traveling though out the United States with her children so that they could see family and experience different cultures.
In 1964 she purchased her own home opening it to all the children in the neighborhood and the community. Everyone looked up to her and called her “MOM”! She believed that it takes a village to raise a child. Family was important to her, so she made it a focal point to make sure family was together throughout the years and Holidays.
Esther was an amazing and complex woman who was an inspiration to all and will be missed by everyone that she encountered. She won the fight with COVID, but lost the battle with Cancer.
Esther was preceded in death by her mother Maurice Garfield; her father Charles Williams; her sister Beverly Gibson; her daughter Margo M. McCaskey. Esther left to cherish, her significant other James Smith; her brother Jeffrey Gibson; her son Quinton Lenard Fields; Efrem Raymond Fields; Cedric Dion Fields; her niece Nicole Berry; and Mia Berry. Also survived by 15 Grandchildren, six Great Grandchildren, two Great Great Grandchildren, and one God daughter. As well as a host of extended family and friends.

One of the sweetest souls one could ever meet! I had the pleasure of working with Esther and learning lots from her. Rest on my friend, Well done!!
Thank you for everything you taught me Mrs Fields. Love you forever.
Catherine (Cat) Young – I will miss my friend Ester. She was an amazing person. We have known each other for years, worked together, and remained friends for years. We talked often and our conversation would last from two to three hours. We talked about everything from politics, tv shows, the metro, and life in general. Ester knew everything about people at Metro and kept me informed. Ester was well known for cooking biscuits and we would sit and eat biscuit after biscuit. The best biscuits in Washington state. My Love for our friendship will never die. Live on my friend. Thank you for being my friend.
