Eugenio Cara Malla
Eugenio (Amang, Kenyo) Cara Malla passed away July 6, 2016 at the astonishing age of 104. He was born on November 11, 1911 in San Nicolas, Pangasinan, Philippines to mother Teresa Cara and father Delmacio Malla.
He is survived by his son Eulogio Malla and daughters Cresencia del Rosario and Teresita Hora, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Irene Esteban Malla, their children Benjamin, Crestita and infant son Remiegio, siblings Anastacio, Emilio and Pablo.
‘Amang’ married Irene Esteban ‘Inang’ on November 28, 1933. They lived in a small cottage in the countryside of San Nicolas, Pangasinan, Philippines until their life was interrupted by the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1941. The Malla Family had to quickly leave their cottage and hide along a large river in San Nicolas. After World War II, Amang boarded a ship on February 28, 1946 bound for Kauai, Hawaii. There he worked in the pineapple plantations for 10 years while also finding entertainment through fishing and catching frogs.
Amang applied for United States citizenship and received confirmation on November 11, 1954. The following year, Amang and his brother Anastacio boarded a ship destined for Stockton, California. In 1966, he moved to Seattle and reunited with his wife two years later. He and his beloved Irene were married for 79 years.
When he was not working at his gardening business, Amang spent his free time at what we called the ‘Big House, the Masonic hall ‘Grand Oriente’ for the Sons of San Nicolas. He would meet friends and play gin rummy and in later years tended a garden there. He loved to plant and grow vegetables. Amang worked hard all his life and was an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation and viewing will be Friday, July 15 between 5 PM and 8 PM. Funeral will be Saturday, July 16 at 9:30 AM, followed by the burial at 11 AM at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial, 16645 International Blvd, SeaTac, WA 98188
