Obituary

Evelyn Moen died in Kent, Washington, on October 2 at age 86.

Evelyn was born on June 30, 1926 (ten minutes after her twin sister, Margaret) at the Martha Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Thomas and Gertrude Carr. Evelyn grew up in Richmond and Washington, D.C.

She graduated from McKinley High School in Washington and then went to work for the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1944. She worked there until 1946 when she got a job as a reservation agent with American Airlines at Washington National Airport.

Evelyn’s father – a World War I veteran – had gone back into military service during World War II, serving stateside and then later with U.S. occupation forces in Asia. By 1949 he was transferred from Seoul, Korea, when all American occupation forces were withdrawn from there, to Tokyo, Japan. This assignment allowed him to bring his family to live with him. His wife, along with the three children still at home — Evelyn, Esther, and John — went there to live in August of 1949. The other three children — Gertrude, Virginia, and Margaret — were married by then.

Evelyn got a job as receptionist and personal shopper at the Tokyo Main Post Exchange in downtown Tokyo. She met her husband-to-be, Raymond, because she applied for a job with Northwest Airlines, where he was employed as a navigator. They were married in 1950. Their first child, Peggy, was born in Tokyo in 1951. The family moved to Minneapolis several months after Peggy was born, and then to Seattle in 1952. Ray continued to work as a navigator for NWA.

Their second child, a son, Marty, was born in Seattle in 1955.

The family enjoyed travel, often visiting relatives on the East Coast and also traveling to Hawaii and Japan. Evelyn’s hobbies throughout her life included sewing and reading.

The family moved to Minneapolis when Ray was named director of flight administration in 1972. In the following years, Ray and Evelyn made trips to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Germany, the British Isles, New Mexico, the East Coast, Seattle, and other destinations.

Ray remained in his NWA job until he retired in 1986. Just before that time, Ray and Evelyn returned to the Seattle area to establish their retirement home. Marty had moved back there earlier.

Ray and Evelyn traveled frequently to Minnesota to visit their daughter, Peggy, and also visited family in California and on the East Coast.

They welcomed two grandchildren, Eric and Sarah, children of their son, Marty, and his wife, Anna.

Following Ray’s death in 1996, Evelyn continued to travel and also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and other family members in the Seattle area, particularly her sister Gertrude’s family.

Evelyn spent her last year and a half in care facilities because of encroaching health problems. She died in Kent on October 2.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Gertrude Flanders and Esther Allen, as well as by her husband. Along with her children and grandchildren, Evelyn is survived by her sisters Virginia Modlin and Margaret Sheehan, her brother, John Carr, and many nieces and nephews. The memorial service is on Friday, October 19, 11 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 25810 156th Ave. S.E., Covington, WA 98042. Memorials suggested to Veterans of Foreign Wars.
