Obituary
George Putnam Johnson passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 85.
Growing up in Olympia, Washington, George’s formative years were spent honing his interest in cars, boating, and enjoying the outdoors.
After graduating from Olympia High School, George attended the University of Washington, where he met his wife Muffy in 1957. They were married on November 28, 1959.
George received his mathematics degree from the University of Washington, beginning a 33 year career working for Boeing Computer Services (BCS). After electing early retirement, George focused his efforts on his continuing success as a private investor.
George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As he related in later years, his life was his family. He delighted in spending time with his sons, Peter and David, and this practice continued with his grandchildren.
George was an active member of the Seattle Yacht Club and Washington Athletic Club, where he especially enjoyed power boating and handball.
George was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Muffy Johnson. He is survived by his two sons, Peter (Christy Wallace) Johnson of Bellevue, Washington and David (Dara) Johnson of Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Grandchildren include Maxwell (19), Elizabeth (15), Luke (10) and Jack (8).
George will be remembered for his love of life, generosity, keen intellect, strong values and sense of humor. He was a true patriot and phenomenal at relaying life lessons, political beliefs, and jokes to all who would listen. Although not a teacher by profession, George had a remarkable way of sharing his beliefs that had an indelible impression to those fortunate enough to listen: treat all living things with respect, do it right the first time, get outside to connect with nature, learn how to navigate without electronics, take responsibility for yourself, take care of others, understand the political process, save and invest consistently.
George was a maverick, known by many nicknames throughout his life: Peeler Putnam, Crazy George, Geo, and ‘Ever,’ as he referred to his bride, cementing their commitment to be together forever.
George will be truly missed, although will live forever in our beautiful memories, grateful hearts, lessons learned, and kind acts we bestow upon others as we navigate our lives.
Funeral services will be private.
