Obituary

Gilda Obermaier was born on April 13, 1908 in Roslyn, Washington and passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own bed surrounded by her family on September 26, 2004. She grew up and attended school in Black Diamond, Washington. Her parents, George and Violet Schwab, both came from Yugoslavia a language that Gilda spoke fluently. She was the first of 5 children.

Her three brothers, George, Blazy, and Andy have all passed. Her sister Susie Alfaroni lives in Enumclaw, Washington.

Gilda is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Ernest; children Dolores Bud Anthony, Ernie Obermaier and Dan Sandra Obermaier; grandchildren Lori Doug Williams, Scott Carol Anthony, Brian Chris Anthony, Paul DeCamp, Jeff DeCamp, Sara DirkHuebner, and Karly Obermaier ; great grandchildren April Williams, Maria Williams, Rob Anthony, Greg Anthony, Marissa Anthony and Brian Anthony Jr.; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in

death by an infant son Ernest Joseph and a daughter Gilda DeCamp.

Her career was homemaking. She was a wonderful cook that enjoyed cooking many ethnic foods from around the world. She will be remembered for her outstanding stews, roasts, turkeys and lamb dinners. Her Yugoslavian cuisine was the best. She is also noted for making some of the finest chocolate/peppermint cupcakes. Gilda was very much into nutrition and healthful cooking long before it was popular. Additionally she enjoyed animals such as dogs or “pooch” as she would call them. She was quite fond of cats except when they were eating birds. She also found pleasure in long walks.

Gilda and Ernest traveled throughout Europe on several occasions spending much time with family in Germany. They also traveled to Yugoslavia to visit the birth place of Gilda’s parents. There travels included a trip to Hawaii where she loved to smell the different flowers. She enjoyed time at their cabin on Hood Canal where she enjoyed playing card games such as Canasta and Kings Corner. She always had time for a

rousing game of Scrabble and Yahtzee with her

grandchildren as well. Gilda had a knack of keeping us all well fed with cheese, sausage, salami, mydashon, shmarn, cupcakes and her famous home made root beer. Licorice, corn candy and sugarless gum was always a treat the grandchildren could expect from her.

Gilda spent the last five years of her life at the Weatherly Inn located in Tacoma, Washington where she received the absolute best care a person could receive. The family would like to thank the management and staff of the Weatherly Inn for providing such outstanding care. Gilda’s final days were made very comfortable thanks to the thoughtful and caring people that work at the Weatherly Inn.

Gilda was a warm, caring and loving person. Thank you Gilda for all that you have brought to our family. She will be missed, loved, and remembered forever in our hearts. We love you Gilda.

Dear Everybody–I was so sad to see that Gilda had died. I see Mrs. Grassl and Mrs. Hellerman frequently and no one told me she was failing. And then to miss seeing the notice in the paper until today–I will take her flowers tomorrow. Gilda had not seen our son since he was two and he is now 15. I guess she knows all about him now. Ernie I think about you often. I heard you live in the Evanston house. I might just show up on your front porch some day . . .

My love to Ernest. Nancy
