Obituary
Gregory LeRoy Loomis
. . . made the world a better place on August 28, 1927 by being born in Tacoma, Washington to Hugh Everett ‘Ted’ and Dorothee MacCauley Loomis, both educators who passed on a love of books and learning to the entire family.
Greg met Lillian ‘Chris’ Swenson when both worked at Sears and the guys in the garage dared him to ask out the prettiest cashier at the pay window. After a four year courtship and several deployments for Greg in the U.S. Navy, they eloped in 1954.
Daughters Deborah, Pamela and Karen joined the family and lived in Alaska, Oregon and Montana before returning to Washington to Des Moines where they have lived for the last 39 years.
Greg had a sunny personality, a dry sense of humor and always had a funny quip for every occasion.
Our Heavenly Father impressed upon Greg the principles of living through Faith and compassion as fruits of the Holy Spirit. His heart, especially, was for the homeless.
He spent 31 years as a Revenue officer for the IRS and was probably the only agent to get a thank you note’ from a tax payer in appreciation for the way Greg handled his case!
He had a long string of classic cars in his lifetime and on weekends his family would usually hear happy whistling coming from the garage.
Most of all, he was a family man, always there for each member of his family including his grandchildren Greg Walker and Rebecca Grob. He had a special place in his heart for Pamela’s husband, Thomas Grob. He once said Tom was, ‘…all he could ask for in a son-in-law’.
Greg was humble, yet strong, and a devoted ‘born again’ Christian.
He passed away from Parkinson’s disease on February 10th, 2011. On that day, heaven became a little brighter!
Mr Loomis brought one of his classic cars down to Kathleen’s house and gave us a spin on the running boards!
Bill and I remember Mr. Loomis as a quiet but strong, warm man who was beloved and looked up to by his wife and daughters. He had a gentle sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. He will be sorely missed, but we are thankful to know he’s now with the Lord. His family are in our prayers.
Please accept my deepest condolences, I have many great memories of Greg. He will be missed!
To sweet Chris and family, know that you are on our hearts and that we lift up our prayers that the love of Christ and our Father God will uphold you as you miss your wonderful husband, father, and grampa. With much love, your family at Des Moines Drug.
We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family. May your memories give you strength.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I remember Greg as a guy with a sense of humor that sometimes took you by surprise. I know that he was a dedicated family man and am sure that you will miss him greatly. Praise the Lord that we have assurance that we will be united again some day.
